According to Michael Quintanilla of the Los Angeles Times, the following
are current (1998) volleyball terms:
- Chuck: A ball that is pushed or thrown.
- Coverage: Backing up a partner's hit.
- Dink: Ball played just over the net.
- Facial: A spike to the face; also called a six-pack because if you give a facial,you buy the beer.
- Facial disgracial: An extreme facial that sends a player out of the match.
- Flosser: A thong-wearing woman.
- Hammer: A downward hard hit.
- Jed: A block.
- Joust: When two opposing players battle the ball above the net.
- Kong block: A one-armed block invented by beach superstar Randy Stoklos.
- Lollipop: A very easy serve.
- Scoop: A ball saved with any part of the body.
- Spade: An ace serve.
- Volley dolly: A volleyball groupie.
Let's add in Our terms:
- Crane Defense: A means of throwing off the server by assuming the crane position from "The Karate Kid".
- Evil Twins: Suzy & Suzanne.
- First Serve of the Season: The first serve by a player during a given season (April to October). Player gets a do-over if the First Serve of the Season isn't good.
- Hansford's Rule: Significant others may not be on the same team. This long standing rule was suspended in the 1997 season.
- Help!: "Here I am in the front row center postion and therefore the designated setter and there is no way I'm going to be able to get to that pass in time, so would someone else please hit it."
- Higher and Wierder: A non-gamepoint skyball. Introduced by Ray Bates.
- Mo up: "Please do not pass to my ankles." or "A greater vertical vector is necessary for the spheroid to pass over the net."
- Pizza Point: Last gamepoint of the night.
- Skyball: A very high serve. Required by house rules for a gamepoint.
- Slurpies: 7-11 score.
- We bad: Standing behind the service line admiring your awsome serve while the opposing team returns the ball to where you are not.
