Welcome Week kicks off the year
USC President C. L. Max Nikias joins in as the university welcomes new and returning Trojans with a week of special events. But settle in quickly: Classes start Monday.
The university remains the leader among U.S. schools for most all-time medals and gold medals, and continues its streak of having won a gold medal at every Summer Olympics since 1912. The contingent of 44 Trojans in Rio was the most of any American university.
No scientist has seen one alive, but it’s out there: Zenkerella, an elusive, scaly tailed squirrel. Erik Seiffert of the Keck School of Medicine of USC says three newly found bodies are helping scientists understand how the animal evolved over 49 million years.
A USC study finds that tax incentives handed to filmmakers offer minimal return in terms of job or wage growth — yet some states opt to outbid each other for films. “The incentives are a bad investment,” said lead author Michael Thom of the USC Price School of Public Policy.
