R. Pete Vanderveen was named dean of the USC School of Pharmacy and holder of the university's John Stauffer Dean's Chair in Pharmaceutical Sciences in August 2005.
Prior to joining USC, Vanderveen was dean and a professor at the Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences within the Mylan School from 1998 to 2005.
Vanderveen started his formal teaching career at Ferris State University in Michigan in the mid-1970s and was named chair of the clinical pharmacy department before he was 30 years old. He took a job as assistant dean for pharmacy practice at Oregon State University in 1988 and helped develop the school’s first Pharm.D. program.
He is a member of the board of directors of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education and belongs to numerous other professional organizations, including the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
A board-certified psychiatric pharmacist, Vanderveen earned a bachelor of science and master’s degree in pharmacy and clinical pharmacy, respectively, from Purdue University in the 1970s. He earned his Ph.D. in university administration from Michigan State University in 1987 and graduated from the AACP Leadership Development Program in Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business in 1998.
