Lloyd Armstrong, Jr., became provost and senior vice president for academic affairs in August 1993. He is the university's chief deputy to the president. All the university's deans report to Armstrong, as do the libraries, the Division of Student Affairs, and a number of academic support services, including admissions and undergraduate and graduate affairs. The chief information officer of the university reports jointly to Armstrong and the senior vice president for administration. Armstrong also chairs the university's budget steering committee.
A respected physicist, Armstrong spent much of his academic career at The Johns Hopkins University, becoming chair of the department of physics and astronomy in 1985 and dean of the School of Arts and Sciences in 1987. He currently serves on the board of directors of the California Council of Science and Technology and the Pacific Council on International Policy. He has authored/co-authored six books and written 68 journal articles.
