Laura LaCorte was appointed associate senior vice president in July 2005. She established the USC Office of Compliance in 1999 to assist faculty, staff and students in following laws, policies and regulations that apply to the university. The office creates universitywide programs that provide education and training, policy and systems development, and monitoring and testing to help prevent and detect potential violations of law, regulations or ethical standards. It also manages a confidential help hotline and conducts investigations of possible regulatory violations. Particular areas of responsibility include research compliance, conflicts of interest, physician billing, healthcare compliance and information security.
In addition, LaCorte oversees the Department of Contracts and Grants at the University Park and Health Sciences campuses. Responsibilities in this area include pre- and post-award administration of sponsored projects, outreach to faculty and staff, development of training programs and electronic research administration systems, and contract compliance and oversight for federally and non-federally sponsored programs.
As the university’s privacy officer, LaCorte also is responsible for implementing a program to comply with the requirements of the privacy regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
LaCorte joined USC as university counsel in 1996 and was appointed compliance officer in 1999. Before USC, she was a litigation associate at the law firm of Richards & O’Neil, LLP, in New York. She earned a B.A. in political science from Tufts University in 1987 and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1990.
