Deirdre Anglin

Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine

Deirdre Anglin believes that many injuries that she sees every day in the emergency room at LAC+USC Medical Center have causes that can be researched, identified and potentially avoided. Towards this goal, she has published research in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and Annals of Emergency Medicine on the subjects of street gangs, hate crimes, police-dog bites, date rape and domestic abuse.

Anglin says that information is the key to the prevention of these kinds of societal ills. "Injuries are not like a lump you can cut out and biopsy, then treat," Anglin says. "But they have causes behind them, and once you understand them, you are on the road to finding a solution." Based on the results from her research, she believes, for example, that anti-gang money may be best spent on root causes of gangs such as stressed families and unemployment. Her studies of domestic abuse also pinpoint unemployment and stress, as well as alcohol abuse, as prime factors. Anglin is also heavily involved in the domestic violence program at the LAC+USC Violence Intervention Program.

Anglin holds an MD and a master's degree in public health.
