Alfred Newman Recital Hall

Alfred Newman Recital Hall, opened in 1940 and originally known as the Hancock Auditorium, was renovated in the late 1990s and rededicated in January 1999 in honor of legendary film composer Alfred Newman, in appreciation for a gift to the university from his widow, Martha Newman Ragland. At the time, the stage was enlarged to accommodate a 40-piece orchestra; other improvements included acoustical reengineering, upgraded seats, handicapped seating, a greenroom and a piano storage area. The foyer, renamed in honor of prominent arts patron Mary Adams Balmat, also received new carpeting and lighting.
