University Park Campus

The 226-acre University Park campus, home to the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School, and 15 of the university’s 17 professional schools, is located three miles south of downtown Los Angeles, immediately north of the museums and recreational facilities of historic Exposition Park. Rich with architectural history, the campus fosters a vibrant cultural community as well as a stimulating academic environment.

A true urban oasis, the University Park campus offers a lush, park-like atmosphere within a bustling urban setting. Connecting venerable Doheny Memorial Library with ultra-modern Leavey Library is McCarthy Quad, a beautifully landscaped grassy area. Another expanse of gardens and green, John Argue Plaza, borders Widney Alumni House – the university’s oldest structure and a California Historic Landmark. Throughout the campus, tree-lined pedestrian walkways provide access to buildings, while fountains, courtyards and other public spaces encourage quiet reflection as well as social interaction.

Bovard Administration Building, perhaps the most recognizable of the campus’s Italian Romanesque-style buildings, houses an auditorium that is one of the oldest and busiest performance venues in Southern California. Bovard Auditorium was completely restored and renovated in 2003. Together with Alfred Newman Recital Hall, it provides world-class concert space for USC Thornton School of Music faculty members and students as well as invited guest performers. The Thornton School is the most active producer of live music performances in Los Angeles, presenting more than 500 concerts and recitals each year.

Works of public art adorn buildings, courts and open spaces across the University Park campus, particularly the lawn between Exposition Boulevard and Watt Hall and the rolling sculpture garden to the north of Bing Theatre and Norris Cinema Theatre. Additionally, USC’s Fisher Gallery, the first museum established in Los Angeles devoted exclusively to fine art, holds exhibitions ranging from antiquities to works by Old Masters to contemporary pieces by local, national and international artists.

Nearby Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has been home to Trojan football for more than 80 years, and the campus is alive with pre-game picnics and other festivities during most fall weekends. The baseball team plays in storied Dedeaux Field, named in honor of USC’s legendary baseball coach, Rod Dedeaux. The Galen Center, an arena and campus events center opened in fall 2006, provides venues for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams.
