Scholar-Athlete Divide

Athletes, Students, and Scholars: Athletic teams are one of the most visible and influential faces of USC in Los Angeles and the nation. USC was reported to have more athletes in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games than any other university. Our athletes are a source of pride among many students at all major universities. Can the Senate work to enrich the potentially vital interactions between athletic and academic activities on campus. Perhaps playing a more active role in recognizing student-athletes, who are able to combine their studies successfully with top-level athletic competition. Can we encourage efforts to recruit bright and accomplished student-athletes. Some competing universities brag about the number of National Merit Scholars are on their football teams. The new USC `events center’ might be a development that the Senate could help further. The very best universities, such as Stanford, have the confidence to have top flight academic and athletic programs, and so should USC.
