Honorary Degrees Committee
(HDC)

Annually, the Honorary Degrees Committee (HDC) recommends to the president, through the provost, a slate of 14 nominees of outstanding distinction and accomplishment for honorary degrees. The president forwards the slate of nominees to the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees which selects a slate of 10 nominees to forward to the full Board of Trustees for approval, as provided in the university bylaws. The president, at his discretion, selects a slate of candidates of no specific number from the board-approved slate to be invited to receive an honorary degree. Nominees from the original pool of 14 not invited to receive an honorary degree will be returned to the Honorary Degrees Committee for reconsideration in its annual ranking. However, a name may be returned to the pool in this manner for no more than two consecutive years. Nominees who are approved by the Board of Trustees and invited to receive an honorary degree, but who cannot attend commencement to accept the degree, remain active for a three-year period without requiring further review and approval.

The committee reports to the office of the president through the provost and works closely with the staff of the office of the provost.
