Moving from Associate to Full Professor
Gaining tenure at an academic institution like USC may seem like the greatest challenge an academic is likely to experience. However, one’s academic career does not reach its zenith at the Associate Professor level. There is a clear expectation that faculty will continue to be actively involved in teaching, scholarship and community service as Full Professors and leaders in their respective disciplines. However, the criteria for promotion are not always clearly laid out, and faculty are often provided with conflicting advice from different sources as to what must be accomplished to successfully achieve promotion. This session will introduce participants to the expectations of promotion from Associate to Full Professor from the perspective of the Provost’s Office, the University Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure, and USC faculty who have recently been promoted to Full Professor. Representatives from the Committee on Academic Leadership and Development will also be on hand to describe resources available to assist Associate Professors in seeking promotion. Participants are encouraged to bring their own questions and concerns, for interaction with the panelists and fellow participants in an open forum.
