Advising
The Office of College Advising of the USC College offers counseling in the following areas: general education courses, undecided and undeclared students, international students and study abroad opportunities, Structured Curriculum Program (SCP), student athletes, pre-law and pre-health emphases, as well as graduate school preparation. The office is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located in CAS 120. Academic advisors are also available in your department to provide assistance with your academic program. Contact your department for specific information regarding the services provided and the hours of availability.
Bookstores
University Park Campus
The University Bookstore hours of operation are: Monday-Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The bookstore offers new and used course books, technical and general books, school supplies, electronics, computers, computer hardware, computer software and accessories, apparel, gifts and a flower shop. “The Library”
The Library, a store for men and women featuring fashion denim and clothing, gives USC students a discount with a USC ID. The store is located in the University Village shopping center (near the front entrance closest to the Bank of America) and can be reached at (213) 821-5565. Cashier’s Office
Payment of Fees
The University Cashier’s Office, located on the second floor of King Hall, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students who need to process loan payments such as Federal Stafford Loans, scholarship stipends or submit payment of tuition, fees and housing may do so in person or by mail.

Check Cashing Services
The Cashier’s Office offers a check cashing service to students with a current university identification card and a valid driver’s license. This service is available only for first party personal checks made payable to “USC Cash”; maximum amounts are posted. There is a 25 cent service charge. The USC Credit Union provides automated teller machines on campus for banking services. The ATMs are located in the lobby areas of Commons and King Hall and near the bookstore entrance.
Dining
TrojanHospitality offers a variety of dining options, including:
Commons: Commons dining provides three floors of diversified food services. The Grill, located in the basement, features Rice Garden Mandarin Chinese, La Salsa Mexican cuisine, Italian Trattoria pasta bar and Malibu Subs, featuring subs made-your-way with a full soup and salad bar. The campus pub, Traditions, is also located in the basement and provides a meeting place for students, faculty and staff who are 21 years of age and older. On the first floor are six dining operations including: Wasabi Sushi, Wolfgang Puck’s California Pizza Express Café, the Main Street Convenience Store, Betty Crocker Kitchen, featuring fresh baked muffins and cookies with bagel and croissant sandwiches and Seattle’s Best Coffee, Colombo Frozen Yogurt and Carl’s Jr.
The Upstairs Café is located on the second floor and offers table service and a complete lunch menu with banquet rooms and catering.
Café ´84: Adjacent to the Lyon Center, Café ’84 caters to an assortment of food specialties including Jamba Juice, Starbucks Coffee, Tommy’s Pizza, Pasta, stir fry your way at Wok Crazy, a grill serving hamburgers, Mexican and vegetarian selections, and America’s favorite Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
Room Service: TrojanHospitality offers web-based delivery service for students craving pizza but too busy studying to pick up one. To order, logon to www.usc.edu/roomservice and have a fresh hot pizza delivered. Room Service also offers a wide selection of finger foods and beverages ideal for study sessions or meetings. Popovich Cyber Café: Popovich Cyber Café is located at the Marshall School of Business and serves fresh sandwiches, hot entrées and Starbucks coffee. The dining room is equipped with Ethernet connections.
Law School Café: Newly renovated, serving grab-and-go baguette sandwiches, hot entrées with a carving station, snacks and beverages.
Trojan Grounds: This gourmet coffee house, adjacent to Leavey Library, features a variety of Starbucks coffees, sandwiches, salads and desserts. Trojan Grounds is open to serve students during late evening hours.
EVK Residential Hall and Parkside International Residential College: Two residential halls offering an “all you can eat” format. Everybody’s Kitchen (EVK) offers hot entrées, a salad bar, Mexican and vegetarian cuisine, an all-day waffle station and an outdoor grill. Parkside Restaurant features exhibition style cooking and made to order ethnic fare through a variety of options including the Eurasian Kitchen, the Americana Grill, the Grainery, the Greenery and the Performance Café.
Tutor Hall Café: The latest addition to TrojanHospitality. Tutor Hall Café, located at the newly built Tutor Hall at the School of Engineering, will feature global cuisine, Peet’s coffees, sandwiches, salads and a variety of beverages.
Doheny Tea House: Doheny Tea House, located in the courtyard behind Doheny Library, serves Peet’s coffee and teas and grab-and-go snacks.
Health Sciences Campus: The Plaza Marketplace offers a state-of-the-art food court, café and convenience store. Einstein Bros Bagels serves made-to-order bagel sandwiches and coffee.

Financial Aid

At USC every effort is made to help you achieve and maintain good physical, mental and social health. The University Park Health Center offers direct medical care and psychological counseling, as well as prevention programs to assist you in assuming responsibility for your personal well-being.

Primary Care Appointments
For treatment of most acute illnesses and injuries, a primary care appointment can be scheduled Monday through Friday. To make a primary care appointment, please call (213) 740-2778.
Specialty Care Appointments
Specialty care appointments are available by referral only. Areas of specialization include: gynecology, orthopaedics, internal medicine, dermatology, allergy, acupuncture and chiropractic services. Only routine gynecological appointments may be made without a referral by calling (213) 740-2778.
Urgent Care Needs
If you have a medical illness or injury which requires urgent medical attention, you may be seen at the University Park Health Center without an appointment. Each patient who checks in at the front desk will be evaluated and seen based on medical condition and urgency. Should your medical condition require urgent medical attention during non-business hours, call (213) 740-9355 and follow the recorded instructions. In the event of an emergency, when you are on or near the University Park Campus, please call the Department of Public Safety at (213) 740-4321. For all other emergencies, please call 9-1-1.
Student Counseling Services
University Park Health Center Counseling Services is located at YWC 100.

Eligibility for Services
Services at the University Park Health Center are available to students who have paid the current semester student health fee. Fall or spring semester students, taking 6 or more units, are automatically assessed the health fee on their fee bill. Students taking fewer units may use the health center by paying the student health fee.
During the summer, health fee assessment is based on the number of weeks a student is in class and not on the number of units being taken. Continuing students from the spring semester, who are not taking summer classes, may use the health center by paying the summer health fee.
Although the student health fee covers most services rendered at the University Park Health Center, there may be nominal charges for lab tests, prescriptions, orthopedic appliances, copies of X-rays and copies of medical records.

Student Health Insurance
USC Student Health Insurance Plan coverage dates are: Spring/Summer 2006, Jan. 9 to Aug. 13, 2006.
The university requires that all students have supplemental health insurance. This will help to cover the cost of health care that cannot be obtained at the health center, especially in emergency situations where hospitalization may be required. All students carrying 6 units or more are automatically enrolled in, and charged for, the USC student health insurance plan. All international and Health Sciences campus students are automatically enrolled in the health plan even if they are enrolled in less than 6 units. The health insurance plan works in conjunction with the university’s Student Health Centers. For this reason, all students enrolled in the insurance plan are required to pay the student health fee and receive their primary care at the health center on their campus.
New Waiver Requirements
Enrollment will only be waived if documented proof of adequate health coverage, from another plan, is presented to the Student Health Insurance Office on your campus and it meets the following:
The waiver must be submitted by Jan. 27, 2006.
- Must provide at least $500,000 in lifetime aggregate coverage (no per incident minimum)
- Must cover the student for the entire coverage period
- Must have effective dates covering the entire semester: (Spring/Summer 2006, Jan. 9 to Aug. 13, 2006)
- Must pay for at least 80 percent of covered expenses
- Must provide proof with your name on it (identification card or insurance policy)
- Must have a deductible of $250 or less per policy year ($500 out-of-network)
- The plan description must be provided in the English language and currency must be converted to U.S. dollars

Graduate Assistants
Graduate Assistants with a .25 award or higher may be eligible to receive a discount for the USC student health plan and the USC Student Health Center fee. Their assistantship award must show in the Student Financial Detail System. More information is available in your award packet through your academic department.
Student Health Insurance for Students Studying Overseas
Students enrolled in overseas study programs are required to have adequate health coverage. These students are automatically enrolled in the USC Overseas Studies health insurance plan unless they are enrolled in the USC health plan. Mandatory Measles Immunization Policy
The university requires all students to show proof of measles (Rubeola) immunity before being allowed to register for classes. The following documents will serve as proof of immunity: (1) a photocopy of a letter on printed letterhead from a physician stating the month and year you were vaccinated or when you had the disease; (2) a photocopy of your immunization record indicating the month and year of your measles immunization; (3) a photocopy of your medical record stating the month and year you were vaccinated or when you had the disease; (4) proof of date of birth prior to 1957.
Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccination
The USC-University Park Health Center strongly recommends that all incoming USC freshmen receive the meningococcal meningitis vaccination before they come to campus or as soon as possible after arrival.
Meningococcal meningitis is a serious illness that can lead to brain damage, disability and death. College freshmen, particularly those who live in residence halls, have a modestly increased risk of getting this disease. A vaccine is available that protects against four of the five most common strains and provides protection for three to five years. Tuberculosis Screening Requirement
All international students are required to be screened for tuberculosis prior to their first semester of enrollment at USC. The following documentation will serve as proof of screening:
One of the following on printed letterhead from a physician or clinic:
(1) documentation of negative PPD skin test within one year prior to enrollment; (2) documentation of INH therapy for prophylaxis for at least six months; (3) documentation of both a positive PPD skin test and a negative chest X-ray; (4) documentation of chest X-ray showing inactive tuberculosis for students with documentation of previous treatment for active tuberculosis. PPD skin test documentation must include the millimeter induration and reaction to the test, as well as the date read. X-ray documentation must be in the form of a written report. X-ray films are not accepted.
Students unable to provide the required documentation will be asked to receive a PPD skin test and/or chest X-ray and provide us with that documentation. Health Promotion and Prevention Services
The University Park Health Center Health Promotion and Prevention Services is located on the second floor of HSC.
Part of the mission of the Health Center is to promote health and prevent disease. By participating in programs Health Promotion and Prevention Services offers, students can get involved in the maintenance of their health and work to create an environment to support a healthy lifestyle.
Alcohol and drug education programs are a multifaceted effort to provide educational programs, referrals and information about alcohol and other drugs to the campus community. The focus is on informed choice, positive peer influence and early intervention. The Drug Education Class (DEC) provides basic information to students experiencing trouble.
Health Promotion and Prevention Services offers a health resource room that provides students a place to work on papers, speeches, find personal health information, check out books and pamphlets, access bookmarked health sites, screen videos and pick up condoms. Stop by soon.
Sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, can be prevented. Outreach programs and workshops focus on stop-ping transmission. An anonymous HIV antibody testing program with pre- and post-testing counseling is available for a small fee.
The HPPS department is available to schedule a healthy lifestyle workshop presentation in residence halls, greek houses or student organizations on a wide variety of topics such as low-risk drinking, stress, choosing contraception, nutrition and HIV disease. USCard Required
To take advantage of these services, you need to have a USCard, the standard ID card for all USC students. You should have your USCard by the end of orientation; if not, you may obtain one at the USCard customer service office located in the Commons lobby.
USC Library Card
Your USCard also serves as your USC library card. Present it at any campus library circulation desk and a staff member will activate your library privileges.
USC Libraries
USC has more than 20 libraries and specialized collections. If you are not sure where to start, USC’s gateway library, Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Library, is the place to go. The staff at Leavey Library can help you with your research needs and provide referrals to the other libraries on campus.

Resources at USC Libraries
The USC library catalogue, Homer, will help you locate books, periodicals, government documents and dissertations held in libraries on the University Park campus. To access Homer and the catalogues for the Law Library (Advocat) and the Wilson Dental Library (Helix), please visit library.usc.edu.

The Libraries also provide professional reference assistance to students. The Ask-a-Librarian electronic reference service allows students to receive expert answers – via phone, email, online chat or in person – to questions pertaining to virtually any academic field. USC Computer Account
Once you have registered for classes, you need to activate your USC computer account. For instructions, call (213) 740-5555 or visit www.usc.edu/firstlogin. Public Computing Centers
ITS provides access to nearly 1,000 networked machines on campus, all of which feature high-speed Internet connections and many popular software applications. All services are free, except for printing. You will find machines in the following computing centers:

These public computing centers provide unlimited use of the latest-generation Macintosh, Windows and UNIX workstations, as well as Zip drives, scanners and laser printers. There is a charge for printing, but all other services are free. USCard discretionary funds are the only method of payment accepted in public computing centers. Connecting to USC’s Network and the Internet
All the rooms in USC residence halls, as well as some areas of Leavey Library and the Marshall School of Business, are hooked up to ResNet, a high-speed computer network. ResNet allows you to bypass your modem and enjoy free, high-speed (10 megabits per second) Internet access. To link up to ResNet, you need a network interface card, which may come installed in your computer or, if not, may be purchased at the university bookstore. Wireless Access
USC students are able to surf the Web or check email without cables using USC’s high-speed, wireless technology. Most outdoor common areas, libraries, auditoriums and eateries – including the University Village Food Court – have been configured with wireless access points. New locations are added regularly. To take advantage of wireless access, you must obtain a wireless Ethernet card, register it with Information Services and configure it. Computing Security (Antivirus Software and Firewalls)
Computer security is a fundamental and necessary practice for all compute users. A secure computer protects itself against viruses, worms and hacking attempts. Instructions on how to keep your computer secure and links to free antivirus software can be found at www.usc.edu/its/security.
Email and Personal Web Pages
All students get a USC email account. The USC email system is protected by sophisticated anti-spam software, and USC provides students with free antivirus software to protect them while using email. To learn how to use USC’s email, go to www.usc.edu/its/email.

USC Email Retention Policy
Information Technology Services (ITS) automatically deletes from its central servers all messages that have been stored for 180 days in your server-based mailboxes. Course Web Sites and Materials
TOTALe (also known as Blackboard) is the online learning portal through which many USC professors provide electronic copies of their course materials, including syllabuses, readings and handouts. You may also participate, through TOTALe, in an online discussion or take a quiz with automatic grading and immediate feedback. You can access TOTALe at totale.usc.edu.
Online Help

Personal Assistance

Adventures in Information, a series of non-credit, drop-in workshops on computer software and operating systems, is offered each semester. These free, hands-on training sessions cover popular topics, including Web page creation, image editing, and statistics software. Kinko’s
Kinko’s, partnered with Pertusati Bookstore, offers all the products and services found at any Kinko’s location, such as black and white copies from electronic media or hard copy, color copies from both hard copy and electronic media; a variety of binding options from coil and comb to velo and tape; oversize products such as vinyl banners, magnetic signs and over-size color posters that can be laminated and mounted on foam-core board. Kinko’s at the USC Bookstore can print certificates, programs and hard-cover dissertations. Kinko’s, located on the lower level of the bookstore, is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kinko's is closed on Saturday. Parking and Transportation
Commuter Connections
TrojanTransportation has established the ridesharing office, Commuter Connections, to help commuters determine the most viable alternatives to reach campus, whether by vanpool, carpool, Commuter Express lines, Metro bus, Metrolink trains, subway, light rail system, bicycle or scooter. The ride-sharing office has maps and schedules for all public transit systems serving the university area. For more information about ridesharing services, call (213) 740-3575.
Parking
TrojanTransportation distributes campus maps indicating the lots and structures available for student parking during daytime and evening hours.
Tram and Campus Cruiser
The university’s transportation system includes both tram and cruiser services. The tram service provides transportation during weekdays to and from off-campus housing, the Parking Center and Union Station at specific times in the morning and evening. There is also an intercampus shuttle service to and from the Health Sciences campus. The tram does not operate on university holidays. Tram schedules are available at the Transportation office, online at www.usc.edu/parking or from the tram driver.
Campus Cruiser is a safety feature offered by the university from 5 p.m. to 2:45 a.m. every day during the fall/spring semesters. This service provides a walking, bicycle or vehicle escort to a parking area not served by the tram route or during hours that the tram is not in service. To request a cruiser, call (213) 740-4911. Information may also be accessed online at www.usc.edu/parking. Appointments will not be taken for cruiser services.
Student Affairs Council
The university provides advisors in each academic unit and many administrative areas to assist you with complex or persistent problems that may develop during your educational experience. Through academic and administrative offices, skilled professionals provide careful and accurate advice toward the resolution of a wide variety of difficulties experienced by USC students. Examples of the types of concerns that Student Affairs Council professionals address include: academic advisement or disputes, petitions, admissions and financial aid questions, tutorial and skills development, career guidance and housing. Topping Student Center
Topping Student Center serves as the community center for USC. It provides meeting spaces, lounges, computers and the campus information desk. The Scheduling Office, which arranges reservations for meeting rooms and outdoor venues, is located on the first floor of Topping. Bovard Auditorium
Bovard Auditorium is the largest lecture and performing space on the USC campus. It is one of the oldest and busiest performance venues in Southern California. Staffed with an all student technical and house staff, it serves as home for the President’s Distinguished Lecture and Performance Series, the Thornton Symphony, USC Spectrum Performing Arts Series and all large-scale student sponsored events.

Campus Activities works with students and student organizations to provide high quality educational, cultural, recreational and social programs. Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is designed to enhance student leadership opportunities as well as provide services, programs and resources necessary for the positive growth and development of students and their organizations. This center enables students to become more connected with USC. It helps students effectively utilize institutional resources, offers opportunities for students to connect academic life with out-of-class experiences, and provides experiences that will stimulate cognitive, intellectual, personal and social growth. The center’s student Peer Leadership Consultants (PLCs) provide a variety of educational experiences and services to individual students, faculty/staff advisors and student organizations. Recreational Sports at the Lyon Center
Recreational Sports, located in the Lyon Center, understands the importance of balance between academics, wellness, and the responsibilities of student life. Recreational facilities provide opportunities for students, faculty and staff to participate in activities that promote healthy lifestyles, positive human relations and leadership skills.
USC Recreational Sports invites the university community to participate in organized and informal sports and fitness activities, including USC Workout (group exercise), intramurals, club sport teams, Masters Swimming, and officials/referees training.
The Lyon Center, adjacent to the McDonalds Swim Stadium, houses a weight training center, racquetball and squash courts, cardiovascular center equipped with stationary bicycles, elliptical machines, stair climbers, rowing machines, and more. You must present your USC ID to enter the center. Locker rentals on a semester basis and recreational equipment rental are available.

Voter Registration
The Higher Education Act Amendments of 1998 require universities to make a good faith effort to make registration forms available to you. It is important that you exercise your right to vote. Voter registration forms are available in the following locations: Topping Student Center; Student Senate and GPSS, STU 106; Academic Records and Registrar, Registration Building, REG 101; Financial Aid Window, JHH Lobby.
You may also access information from the Federal Election Commission, National Mail Voter Registration Web site at www.fec.gov/votregis/vr.shtml. If you would like to register to vote, click on the state name and review the voter requirements. Some states, including California, will accept computer printout copies of the voter registration form. Please follow the instructions when completing the applications.
