The University of Southern California is again offering several programs abroad during Summer Session 2006. The purpose is to create opportunities for USC students to learn in an international environment. Each program features intensive courses from two to 10 weeks in duration, and many programs visit more than one country.
Experienced USC faculty serve as instructors, tour guides and coordinators, sharing with students the unique excitement of learning at an overseas location. Excursions to important cultural and historical sites supplement classroom lectures. Housing is prearranged for students in university dorms, hostels, inexpensive hotels or with local families.
These special programs offer travel and study opportunities at reasonable cost; programs planned for International Summer Session 2006 are listed below. Interested students should call the contact person indicated for further information about a specific program.
Annenberg School for Communication
Journalism – Graduate Internship in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong or South Africa
Journalism master’s degree students may spend eight weeks at internships in London, Hong Kong or Cape Town during the summer after their first year of graduate study at USC. Students apply to Annenberg International Programs in the fall semester of their first year and enroll in JOUR 540 International Journalism Seminar I during the spring semester. From mid-May to mid-July, they then enroll in JOUR 542 Foreign Reporting and JOUR 543 Field Study while working full-time at internships with prominent media organizations. Communication, Public Relations and Journalism – Undergraduate Summer Study in London, Paris, Prague and Geneva
The International Communication Studies (ICS) program provides undergraduate students an opportunity to study a range of approaches to public communication media across Europe.
Students divide the five-week course into stays in London, Paris, Prague and Geneva. In addition to regular class meetings, students discuss the interplay of current world issues and international media practices with communication practitioners from international news and public relations media, government institutions, private industry and global organizations.

International Summer School in Cambridge, England
The International Summer School in Cambridge, England, offers students a splendid opportunity to study British literature, history, economics, poetry, arts and government, and to examine the background of modern Britain and Britain’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. Students live in Cambridge Colleges and enjoy the artistic pleasures of the Cambridge Arts Festival, as well as the opportunity to visit and appreciate some of England’s major historic sights on the special course excursions.
Interested students may apply from early December through January for this annual summer program by submitting written essays to Dean Joan M. Schaefer, Emerita, Hancock 209D, (213) 740-9346. Students admitted to the program must attend orientation meetings during spring semester at USC with Dean Schaefer and committee in preparation for the intellectual and cultural experiences they will embrace in the open lectures and specialized seminar courses in the International Summer School.
Students participating in this program must complete two of the many excellent seminars offered in the University of Cambridge Summer School and may earn 4 units of elective credit upon completion of a term paper for each course taken while in Cambridge. Paper evaluation is done by the Cambridge Tutors.

French – Dijon, France
The Department of French and Italian will offer a summer program in the city of Dijon, France, where students will be able to improve their knowledge of the French language and culture in a French-speaking environment. The program will be held from June 4 to June 30 and will be centered at the University of Bourgogne. Dijon is the ancient capital of the former Duchy of Burgundy and is renowned for its lovely old streets, monuments, churches and fine cuisine.
Students will live with French families or in a residence hall (Résidence Internationale) within walking distance of the main campus of the university. Classes will be taught by French instructors from Dijon. In addition, supplementary small group tutoring sessions will be taught by USC on-site instructors to help students achieve even greater fluency in French.
Cultural visits and excursions will be arranged to further enhance awareness and understanding of French history and culture. Opportunities for daily interaction with townspeople and students from other countries will be plentiful. The four-unit program is offered at the undergraduate level. Italian – Verona, Italy
The Department of French and Italian offers students the opportunity to participate in an eight-week program in the historic city of Verona. Students may enroll in a maximum of eight units including an intensive language course and/or a course on Italian civilization.
Classes meet Monday through Thursday. Excursions to Bologna, Milan, Rome, Florence, archeological sites and museums are planned so that students may discover Italy’s historical and artistic treasures. Participants will be housed in elegant apartments at the Adige Residence. No previous knowledge of Italian is required. Spanish – Buenos Aires, Argentina
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers students the opportunity to participate in a seven-week summer/austral winter program in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The program combines intensive courses in Spanish language with a course in Argentine culture, society and the arts. While studying in Buenos Aires, students will participate in field trips to museums and historical sites, such as Colonia, Uruguay. Students will spend a week in Perú and visit Machu Picchu, where they will study the region’s pre-Hispanic legacy.
Courses are held Monday through Thursday. Students are encouraged to participate in cultural events and in such activities as football and tango lessons. Students will be housed with Argentine families.

Spanish – Madrid, Spain
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the USC College announces its seven-week program in Madrid. Improve your knowledge of the Spanish language and culture and earn 8 units of credit while living in one of Europe’s most exciting cities. Students take two courses, live with a Spanish family, tour Madrid’s museums, make a one-week visit to Barcelona, and take short trips to the monastery of El Escorial and the historical cities of Segovia and Toledo.

Spanish – Heredia, Costa Rica
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers students the opportunity to participate in a program that combines intensive courses in Spanish language and culture, with field trips to sites of historical, economic and ecological importance. We will make short trips to Manuel Antonio National Park, the hot springs at Tabacón and the Arenal volcano. We will also make a week-long trip to another Central American country to expand your understanding of the rich mosaic of cultures of Central America.
Classes are held Tuesday through Friday mornings, with computer classes and conversational tutorials in the afternoon. Students are housed with Costa Rican families within walking distance of the university.
