Academic Support Programs contribute to a collaborative approach to learning in the academic community at USC. The staff at the Center for Academic Support (CAS) works to meet individual student needs as they relate to learning enrichment. Services available include: subject tutoring and weekly Learning Enrichment Workshops on topics indicated below. Students can also schedule private workshops for small groups. Scattered? Frustrated? Behind in Homework? Take Control . . . of Your Academic Life!An overview of the foundational skills for becoming a well-organized and master student will be provided. Students will learn goal setting strategies, concentration skills and develop an individualized “plan” for efficient study time.
Notetaking: Are You Getting the Most Out of Each Lecture?This workshop will cover ways to improve notetaking skills and especially how to “keep up” during fast-paced lectures. The relationship between quality listening and notetaking skills will also be discussed.
Power ReadingPower reading is not speed reading! Power reading is the process of developing an approach to reading assignments with the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of the material. Emphasis will be placed on “quality” reading needed for tests and comprehension.
Writing PapersAn overall discussion of the writing process for term papers, research papers and essay exams. Other topics include organization of ideas, structure and outlines.
Thinking Skills in Problem SolvingNew information about critical thinking to enhance your ability to retain new information and derive new meaning.
Test-Taking AnxietyDid you know the material for the test only to miss it on the exam? Creative ways to relieve anxiety will be presented and practiced.
Learn to Remember – Remember to Learn!The importance of utilizing short- and long-term memory will be discussed. Students will be involved in memory exercises and techniques that sharpen the ability to recall information.
Exam-Taking StrategiesAre you “cramming” before every test? Preparing for exams as a semester-long process will be discussed. Test-taking strategies for objective and essay exams will be covered.

USC Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity
The USC Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity (KCLC) is for students who learn "differently" and wish to receive academic support. Students who have a learning difference, a documented learning disability, ADHD or other disability-related learning challenge are encouraged to utilize the KCLC. At the KCLC, students are paired with a learning assistant and/or tutor, have access to assistive technology, can study in a quiet environment and receive guidance in their preferred way of learning.
