Clinical Translational Science
"Translational science" or "translational research" is focused on accelerating the transformation of experimental treatment into applicable forms of patient care (bench-to-bedside) in areas including, but not limited to:
- Biostatistics
- Epidemiology
- Genetics / Genomics
- Drug and Device Development
- Preventative Medicine
- Community Based-Participatory Research

CTSA and CTSI
Acronyms associated with clinical translation can be confusing, please note the following distinction:
The Clinical Translational Science Awards (CTSA) is the umbrella program that funds and oversees Clinical Translational Science Institutions (CTSI) across the country. Click here for the directory of Clinical Translation Science Institutions.
SC CTSI
The Southern California CTSI is one of 60 institutions to receive funding from the NIH Clinical Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program.
In 2010 the "SC CTSI" became the recipient of a $56.8 million CTSA award. The SC CTSI has made some of that funding available through
- Pilot Awards - in 2010 granted 24 investigators $30,000 each to pursue research with clinical translational potential.
- Career Development Awards
- Awards for Community Based / Community Partnership Research
CTSA
The Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA), is an NIH Common Fund Program designed to:
- Foster high-risk/high-reward research
- Enable the development of transformative tools and methodologies
- Fill fundamental knowledge gaps
- Change academic culture to foster collaboration
CTSA Key Function Committees
- Administration
- Biostatistics/Epidemiology/Research Design
