Randolph Hall is the vice provost for research advancement and a professor in the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. As a vice provost, Hall provides the leadership to build bridges between basic and applied research, substantially increase USC’s share of federal and foundation research support, and develop partnerships with major research universities throughout the globe. His office works to build strong relationships with federal government agencies and foundations, in areas ranging from the biological and medical sciences, physical sciences, and engineering to the humanities and social sciences. Hall works closely with the associate deans for research of the College, the Keck School of Medicine, and the other USC Schools, as well as with Research Center Directors and faculty leaders to develop cross-disciplinary partnerships.
Hall’s experience includes serving as the founder/principal investigator for two national research centers, the Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE), and the National Center for Metropolitan Transportation Research (METRANS). He also served as senior associate dean for research in the Viterbi School of Engineering for four years. Hall was chair of Industrial and Systems Engineering during a period when the faculty size grew by 50%, and when it became the first named academic department at the University of Southern California, upon receipt of a $10 million gift from Daniel J. Epstein. Prior to joining USC, Hall was manager of systems engineering at Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways, a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley, and a senior research engineer at General Motors.
Hall is the author of Queueing Methods for Services and Manufacturing and the editor for the Handbook of Transportation Science. He is now editing a book for Springer on Reducing Delay in Health Care Delivery. Hall’s current research centers on risk assessment and emergency response for homeland security, patient flows and delay reduction in health care, and transportation system analysis. He is funded by the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security and Transportation, as well as the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and L.A. Care. He is on the board for the American Society of Engineering Education’s Engineering Research Council, and is chair for the Transportation Science Ph.D. dissertation award committee. He has numerous publications in the areas of transportation, logistics, system engineering, and queueing.
Hall received his Ph.D. (1982) and M.S. (1980) in civil engineering from U.C. Berkeley. He received his B.S. in industrial engineering and operations research from U.C. Berkeley in 1979.
