
Jean Morrison serves as vice provost for academic affairs and graduate programs, reporting directly to the provost. In this role, she oversees the university's academic affairs and is responsible for the USC Graduate School. She represents the provost in the university's academic program review process, which is designed to foster academic excellence at all levels. In addition, she oversees a number of important university committees, including the University Curriculum Committee, the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP), and the Provost's Oversight Committee for Athletic Academic Affairs (OCAAA). She also serves on the Strategic Plan Annual Report Committee and co-chairs the Interdisciplinary Faculty Hiring Committee. She is leading the effort to establish a Diploma in Innovation that provides Ph.D. students with the knowledge and skills they need to transfer their creative work to the outside world. She works closely with Vice Provost Robert Cooper on budget issues that affect USC's schools. In addition, Morrison oversees USC's highly successful Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) program, which has been under her direction since 2002.
A professor of earth sciences, Morrison is a metamorphic petrologist whose research addresses how the earth's crust evolves over time. In particular, she studies the isotopic composition of rocks and minerals to understand the role that fluids play in fault systems. She served as an editor of the Journal of Metamorphic Geology and as an associate editor of the American Mineralogist and the Geological Society of America Bulletin. Morrison has served on a variety of panels at the National Science Foundation. In 2000, she was named the Sigma Chi Professor of the Year and received Sigma Gamma Epsilon's Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2002, she received the prestigious USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching. Morrison previously served as vice provost for graduate programs and as an associate dean in the graduate school. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1988; her M.S. from the University of Georgia in 1983; and her B.A. from Colgate University in 1980.
