Estimated Cost of Attendance and Full Grant-in-Aid
The estimated cost of attendance for the academic year is published here.
Athletic scholarships are awarded as a percentage of the value of a full grant-in-aid. The full grant-in-aid amount is calculated annually based on the following costs determined by the Financial Aid Office:
- Mandatory Fees
- Room & Board
- Required Textbooks
Per NCAA regulations, the full grant-in-aid amount does not cover the allowances for transportation and personal expenses included in the cost of attendance. Additionally, the full grant-in-aid calculation sets the value of mandatory books at $400. Students on athletic scholarships receive all required textbooks for their enrolled classes. The actual value of books received by students often exceeds $400 and is dependent on students’ course schedules. (For the 2012-13 academic year, the textbook allowance will be increased from $400 to $800.)
- Students receiving an athletic scholarship equivalent to 1 percent of a full grant-in-aid receive the required textbooks for all registered classes.
- Students receiving an athletic scholarship between 2 and approximately 78 percent of a full grant-in-aid receive required textbooks and a scholarship to cover tuition and mandatory fees. The amount for tuition and fees depends on the scholarship equivalency.
- Students with an athletic scholarship ranging from approximately 79 to 100 percent of a full grant-in-aid receive required textbooks, a scholarship covering tuition and mandatory fees, and a stipend for room and board. Stipend amounts for room and board depend on the scholarship equivalency.
For 2012-13, the monthly room-and-board stipend for the full grant-in-aid is $1,383 for students living in USC housing and $1,457 for students living in off-campus housing.
Summer Enrollment & Costs
The duration of the athletic scholarship is specified in the athletic financial aid agreement. Beginning in 2012-13, the duration of athletic scholarships can range from one year to five years. The duration of the athletic scholarship is determined by USC.
Scholarship Appeal Process
Students are notified by July 1 that their athletic scholarships will be renewed for the upcoming academic year, renewed at a lower amount, or not renewed. If a scholarship is renewed at a lower amount or is not renewed, the student may appeal this decision with the Financial Aid Office. To review the appeal process, please click here. For information about the Athletic Department’s policies on scholarship renewals, please visit the Athletic Compliance website.
Please note, the NCAA recently passed new financial aid legislation that will go into effect on August 1, 2012. The University of Southern California is in the process of reviewing and updating our financial aid policies and will adjust this site as needed when the review is completed.
