There are many people who might work with you during the undergraduate admission process at USC. The admission counselor who covers your territory is your main contact, but you may meet several of us throughout the year. If you have looked at the application, you probably noticed our Quick Takes section, which asks you to tell us about yourself, your role models, favorite food, etc. Since we get to know you so well through your application and through personal contact, we thought we would turn the tables on ourselves so you can learn more about us...

I am a native Californian who grew up in Torrance. Although I had every intention of going to college outside California, I ended up choosing USC and loved every minute of my student experience. I stayed here after graduation and have spent most of my professional career serving in various roles across the university.

Why USC?
USC offers students an academic and social environment unparalleled in American higher education. It is large enough to have something for just about everyone, but is also a place where each individual is respected and receives personal attention. USC’s unmatched diversity, along with its values-driven philosophy and academic excellence, results in educational offerings that are truly relevant to the 21st century.

Admission Advice:
The college search and selection process are all about finding the right fit. Don’t become too narrowly focused on one institution. Broaden your horizons and keep your options open; there are more than 2,000 colleges and universities in the U.S., and there is certainly more than one that will be the perfect fit for you.

My roots are in south-central Pennsylvania, but my parents moved to Southern California shortly after I was born. I grew up mostly around Long Beach (a Millikan alum -- go Rams!), and attended USC. I studied filmmaking with a dream to change the world by telling stories that must be told, by bringing forward voices we all need to hear. A job I thought would be temporary became my dream career, for we in college admission work to change the world every day. What a wonderful, fortunate coincidence.

Why USC?
It felt right when I visited campus and experienced the sprit, felt the supportive atmosphere, and took in the beautiful campus. I still find it odd that my high school geography instructor encouraged me to go to Berkeley instead. For me that made no sense.

Admission Advice:
I believe the most successful applicants care not about advice of the admission counselors, but instead strive to expand their minds as best they can, while also seeking enriching life experiences. So I offer this advice anyway: Do your very best in the toughest classes you can handle.

Movie: I move between Apocalypse Now and African Queen. And here’s a weird coincidence: Both are anti-war epics, both were filmed under extremely difficult conditions, and both are set on a twisting, jungle river.
Food: Anything prepared by my wife, or by David Myers.
Quote: "I know what you’re thinkin’: 'Did he fire six shots or only five?' Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I kind of lost track myself. But being this is a .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head ... clean off ... you’ve got to ask yourself one question, 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?"
Role Model: My old man.
Musical Performer: I like anything with genuine, sincere emotional expression: mostly rock, but also opera, hip-hop, punk, New-Wave, shouting, laughing, crying. The best is Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Book: Love Gatsby, Mockingbird. Greg Rucka’s Kodiak series is fun. David Sedaris just kills me.

I grew up on both the east and west coasts and spent part of my childhood in my mother’s native country of France. I was bitten by the admissions bug during my time as a USC Tour Guide. This interest turned into a passion not only through my six years of working in the USC Office of Admission but also as an executive board member of the Western Association for College Admission Counseling. When I’m not reading applications, I enjoy all things food-related, exploring L.A. on foot, doing aerial silks, and shopping for vintage items on Etsy.

Why USC?
USC offers unparalleled academic and extracurricular opportunities within one of the most diverse student communities and vibrant cities in the entire world.

Admission Advice:
Think of each part of the application as an opportunity to say something meaningful. Every part of the application – from how you present your Activities Summary to what you say in your Short Answer responses – should come together to paint a picture of who you are in all of your multidimensionality.

My passion for education has inspired me to pursue a graduate degree in Educational Counseling at USC’s Rossier School of Education.

I enjoy going to the theatre, cycling, shopping, and taking advantage of So Cal with friends and family.

Having been born in Minnesota and raised in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I felt a strong urge to leave the Midwest—and my winter jacket—behind to attend the University of Southern California. It was easily one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m thrilled to be back working for USC and look forward to continuing my work in higher education.

Why USC?
People often talk in clichés and hyperbole about how your years as an undergraduate are the best years of your life. But, once you attend USC and explore all of the opportunities the university and surrounding Los Angeles area have to offer, you begin to truly understand why people talk this way. USC provides its students a diverse and wholly welcoming collegiate experience that rivals any in the nation.

Admission Advice:

Instead we want to read your application and immediately get a sense of your unique personality.

I am a native Angeleno who ventured out east to Williamstown, Massachusetts, for four years of intriguing weather patterns and elaborate wool sweaters. My experience with admissions began in middle school and continued as an undergraduate tour guide. After working for Congress and in architecture, I returned to higher education to pursue my love of working with students and families on the path to college. In my free time I read, attend concerts and museum exhibitions, travel, volunteer with a number of local non-profit organizations, and hike ocean-view trails in Malibu. I’m also a foodie, an auto enthusiast, and a diehard sports fan (especially hockey). Happily, Los Angeles’ myriad offerings constantly keep me on my toes.

Why USC?
USC expertly pairs academic excellence with a thriving campus life. Set in a realm of endless opportunities, USC students explore, engage, and exceed their wildest expectations. I am constantly delighted (and sometimes baffled) by the groundbreaking research and professional output of our learning community. And, of course, there is no better place than Los Angeles to interact with one of the most diverse populations in the world, access incredible resources outside of the classroom, and soak up a whole lot of sunshine. I am proud to be a member of the thriving Trojan Family. Fight on!

My roots are in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. I left home to pursue college in Texas and since then have lived and worked in Texas, New York, Florida and now California. I have been working in college admission and Student Affairs roles for the past seven years and have loved every minute of it. I am happiest outside: I love the ocean because I find it familiar and comforting. I really enjoy fútbol, running, learning other languages and traveling to new places. I have a very eclectic taste in music and I always miss Puerto Rico! I am, however, very happy to call sunny California my second home.

I am an island-grown boy from Honolulu, Hawaii, who made the long trek across the Pacific to experience college life on the mainland. Thankful for the rich life experiences I had as an undergraduate, I elected to remain in Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment, seeking to grant a voice to those often overlooked in society. I soon recognized that I could achieve this goal in the realm of higher education, and count it a true privilege to serve on the admission staff here at USC.

Why USC?

Our undergraduates have immediate access to vast academic resources characteristic of a large research institution, but are also personally mentored in their scholastic, social, and career pursuits. Although most of my experience lies in working with low-income and first-generation students, I believe all students should have the option and opportunity of going to college.

Why USC?
USC is a very exciting place to be. Not only is it an incredibly beautiful campus, but the opportunities for intellectual growth and student involvement are endless. Apart from the opportunity at a great education, to me, the best part is the unique culture at USC. There is a great sense of community and school pride here.

Admission Advice:
Instead of telling us about what you think we want to hear, don’t be afraid to be yourself and to showcase your unique experiences. Definitely do your research and make sure where you are applying reflects you and your interests. It’s all about what school fits you best.

I was born and raised in Southern California, and attended Westridge School for Girls in Pasadena. I simply love Los Angeles. The city has so much to offer, and although I have lived here my entire life, I am still discovering new parts of the city. There is always a new restaurant to try, exhibit to see, or flea market to peruse.

Why USC?
Students here have access to a vast array of resources. From the course offerings, to the research opportunities, from clubs to sports, it is truly a vibrant campus.

Admission Advice: Have fun doing the research. Take the time to learn about, or even visit, if you can, the schools that you are interested in. The more you know about what you are looking for in a college or university, the more prepared you will be when you apply. This research will help you find the places that are a good fit for you.

I was raised in Southern California, traveled to the South for my undergraduate degree and have settled back in Los Angeles after receiving my master's degree from USC. As an undergraduate I was a member of a Greek organization, worked in a psychology research lab and at the student recreation center. I was also very involved with undergraduate admissions and recruitment and continued this work while at USC. I’m very happy to be pursuing admissions further as part of the Trojan Family.

Why USC?
USC has an undergraduate culture like no other. The academics are first rate and the amount of pride associated with being a Trojan is unparalleled anywhere else. USC also offers a diverse student body with varied interests and passions which provide a multifaceted experience in and out of the classroom. While having grown up in Los Angeles I spent a great amount of my high school career abroad working with elementary schools and providing them with basic educational resources.  This interest continued throughout my college years where I worked with at-risk youth in Southern California.  I have always been interested in the voices of our youth and I am so excited to hear what our applicants have to share!

Why USC? USC is a place of exploration.  With hundreds of options for majors, student organizations, research opportunities, and so much more, you can explore the world and yourself in this unique and thriving environment.

Admission Advice: The hardest part of the college admission process is discovering yourself and what your needs are from an institution.  Find an institution that both complements and challenges you.

I was born and raised in Southern California. During college I worked in the corporate world and quickly realized that working for a financial institution was not the place for me. As an ethnic studies major and a first-generation college student, I developed a passion for higher education and wanted to be an advocate for the underrepresented population of students who are trying to gain college admission. I am ecstatic to be able to interact with such a diverse population of students from various backgrounds and all walks of life who have an interest in becoming future Trojans!

Why USC?: At USC, a student can achieve any and everything they put their mind to. With our state-of-the-art and world class programs, the opportunities to achieve are limitless.

Admission Advice: Be yourself! Be sure to express yourself clearly and make sure we get a sense of who you are through the writing sections of the application. We know that there is much more to a person than test scores and grade point average. We want to know what else you have to offer.

I am a small town girl from Bountiful, Utah. I moved to Southern California for college, eager to experience something new, and I have been here since. I love Los Angeles for its warm weather and opportunities, but I miss my Utah mountains. When I’m not running or hiking, you’ll find me trying a new restaurant. I listen to NPR every day and I love to dance to any upbeat song.

Why USC?
At USC you have options. Academically there are so many majors, minors, and courses to choose from. You are not only allowed to pursue your interests, but you’re encouraged to, regardless of how diverse they may seem. But USC is more than an academic institution. You’ll have experiences here that will shape you into a person of character, who is able to think analytically and adapt to changes.

Admission Advice:
You can read and research as much as you want about any school, but the most valuable research you can do is visit a campus. Only then can you actually get a real feel for what the school is like. USC is full of positive, fun energy – visit if you can! College is the best experience, so make sure you take the decision seriously and make the best decision for you.

I like to call myself a double Trojan after spending six years at USC for both my undergraduate and graduate coursework. I studied public relations and worked at a large agency before realizing that I could merge that PR know-how with my growing interest in higher education. I’m a native Angelino from the suburb of Downey. I never tire of trying new restaurants, traveling, writing anonymous blog posts or discussing grammar and punctuation.

Why USC?
It's an amazing experience with a little bit of everything, in the middle of everything.

Admission Advice:
Use the essay, short answers and quick takes to your advantage. Those writing components are our window into who you are and why USC is the place for you. If you have any questions, ask.

Born and raised in China, I moved to Los Angeles after elementary school, and spent my high school and college years in sunny SoCal.  Seeking a change of scenery (and the seasons), I went to the East Coast for law school and later began my legal practice at an international law firm in New York City.  As my practice evolved, I realized it no longer agreed with my aspirations and goals.  Thus I returned to higher education, a field I have been passionate about ever since my days as a student academic counselor at UCLA.  An avid fan of the arts and literature, I am a zealous supporter of local museums, used bookstores, public libraries and concert halls.

Why USC?
This university believes in and advocates a combination of theoretical exploration with practical experience, as well as interdisciplinary learning across academic fields (such as art history and chemistry, or electrical engineering and operatic singing).  USC not only boasts these ideals, but also strives to achieve them year after year, class after class.

Admission Advice
Be yourself (when writing the essays and short answers); read directions (when completing the application); be on time (when submitting the application and other documents).  The key lies in attention to details and spelling and grammar checks!

I was born and raised in Marina del Rey, California--a short ride away from USC--and attended Santa Monica High School. After exploring some new cities (and climates!) I am thrilled to be back home in Los Angeles representing USC. Aside from the amazing weather, this great city offers students and professionals alike interesting cultural experiences, great food, non-stop entertainment, and yes- some unbeatable shopping!

Why USC?
There are many fine institutions in the world, but few can do what USC does: provide students with the tools and resources to not only become distinguished scholars, but also effective communicators, brilliant leaders, and socially responsible community members.

Admission Advice:
Don’t be afraid to get creative in your application. And don’t hesitate to ask questions! After all, we are college graduates who went through the same exact process as you!

I’m from the city in the Midwest, the best city in the whole wide world, Chicago, and first came to Los Angeles as an undergraduate student at USC. Upon graduation I left California to pursue a master’s degree in higher education focusing on organization and leadership development. Not soon after leaving LA, I realized I wanted to return to the city, the palm trees and my alma mater to serve students in this capacity.

Why USC?
Being a graduate of USC, I can attest to the transformational experience students have on this campus. USC is truly dedicated to the development of students as intellectuals but also as individuals, enhancing their abilities to be active, conscientious contributors within an ever changing world.
