3. New Member Orientation Social Hour

New Member Orientation Social Hour, Special USC Fisher Gallery Tour and Interdisciplinary Panel Discussion: Women In Sports.

Wednesday, September 22

(For times, check the schedule of events listed below)

Join us for a special afternoon/evening to welcome new members to our club, take a special tour of the USC Fisher Gallery's "Game Face" exhibit and stay to hear three dynamic and accomplished women examine fact vs. fiction with regard to women's experience in competitive sports. After the discussion, feel free to enjoy a post-rush hour drive home or stay to enjoy our delightfully elegant and intimate dinner service.

Michael Messner, chair of the USC sociology department and author of "Taking the Field: Women and Men and Sports," moderates a discussion with panelists Sarah Banet-Weiser, Paula McGee and Nancy Solomon on the challenges faced by female athletes.

Banet-Weiser is an assistant professor in the USC Annenberg School for Communication. McGee (pictured) was a member of the USC National Championship basketball team in 1983 and 1984. Solomon, an expert on Title IX, works for the California Women's Law Center.

Among the topics for discussion are:

* Fact and fiction surrounding Title IX, which guarantees that "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal assistance;"
* The media image of the female athlete, which tends to focus on female athletes' femininity and sexuality over their achievements on the court and field; and
* The perspective and real life experience of a former championship USC women's basketball player.

The pre-reception and the panel discussion is preceded by a 4 p.m. tour of the "Game Face: What Does a Female Athlete Look Like?" exhibition in USC Fisher Gallery.

This event is co-sponsored by the USC Fisher Gallery, the USC University Club and made possible with the generous support of the USC Office of the Provost.

5. Save the Date! Cultural Events on Campus

New Exhibits and Family Programming at the Fisher Gallery

Game Face: What Does a Female Athlete Look Like? Sponsored by USC Fisher Gallery, USC Athletics Department and the Mass Mutual Financial Group (including Oppenheimer Funds, Inc.)

What does a female athlete look like? What makes her tick? Co-curated by Jane Gottesman and Geoffrey Biddle, this exhibition celebrates the popularity and success of women's sports through an extraordinary collection of photographs and stories from female athletes about how sports have shaped their identities. The photos reveal women's complex relationship to sports, as well as men's support for the athletic females in their lives. Amanda Beard, Serena Williams, Ila Borders and USC's own Janet Evans and Inger Miller are among the Southern Californians represented.

Exhibit runs Thursday, September 9, 2004 through Saturday, October 30, 2004.

Gallery Hours: 12 noon - 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays
Admission: Free

The Women of Troy
Sponsored by USC Fisher Gallery, USC Athletic Department

On view concurrently with "Game Face," this photography exhibition celebrates the accomplishments of female USC athletes and highlights the dedication to sports that encourages women to keep competing, whether on the varsity, club or intramural level.

While women athletes do not often enjoy the same kind of recognition - financial or otherwise - that their male counterparts do, this installation explores the spirit and passion that USC's female athletes have had over the years in their respective sports.

Exhibit runs Thursday, September 9, 2004 through Saturday, October 30, 2004.

Gallery Hours: 12 noon - 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays

7. Reciprocal Club of the Month

Your USC University Club is a member of the Association of College and University Clubs (ACUC). This means that you enjoy reciprocal privileges at more than 100 private university clubs across the U.S.A., and around the world, within the ACUC network. To try to bring this wonderful benefit closer to you, we've decided to highlight an ACUC club in each newsletter.

Please remember that to ensure that your visit to another university club is an enjoyable one, it is very important to telephone ahead to introduce yourself as a member of the USC University club, confirm the club's hours, services and make reservations. Individual clubs may have restrictions in the use of their facilities or in the frequency of visits. When you call, be sure to inquire about any restrictions that may apply.

UC Berkeley Faculty Club

Originally built as a single room, the clubhouse of The Faculty Club at UC Berkeley is a landmark redwood structure tucked in amid the trees of the Faculty Glade. Its focal point is the Great Hall, originally built in 1902. The Club was founded "out of a practical need for warm lunches at reasonable prices, and a need for companionship in an early-day community which lacked the cultural, social and residential amenities to satisfy the needs of a new faculty." Today, The Club provides a variety of services for University of California members, guests and departments. It is a private club controlled by an elected board.

Located right in the middle of the central Berkeley campus, the Club provides dining, banquet and catering facilities and affordable guest rooms. The rooms each come equipped with a telephone and television set and most can accommodate an additional cot or baby crib. A complimentary continental breakfast is included in the price of the hotel room (rates are periodically subject to change without notice).

Room rates vary from $53.00 to $130; rates for the Executive Suite (Living Room, bedroom with 2 queen-sized beds, full bath, kitchenette and 2 fireplaces) from $178 - $210.

We think that the queen bed with private bath at $102.00 a night for double occupancy in the Bay Area is a steal!

8. Recipe of the Month

Our Wasabi Vinaigrette has become a very popular sauce for grilled fish her at the club. There have been quite a few requests for the recipe so I thought it would be a good addition to this month's letter. You can use on just about any grilled fish, particularly fish and shrimp. You can regulate the heat to your liking. So if you like your wasabi hot, just add a little extra to suit your taste.

Wasabi Vinaigrette

1 cup soy sauce
1 1/2 cups grape seed oil (or other vegetable oil)
1/2 cup rice vinegar
2 tablespoons wasabi powder
1 tablespoon black sesame seeds
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Mix soy sauce, vinegar, wasabi, sesame seeds, salt and pepper in a large non-reactive bowl. Slowly add oils in a stream while whisking constantly. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.

Can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Enjoy!!!

That about wraps it up for this issue.
Be sure to say hi next time you're in.
