Featuring the west coast premiere of Michael Colgrass' solo percussion showpiece Te Tuma Te Papa, with percussionist Lynn Vartan.
Director Donald Crockett and the USC Thornton Contemporary Music Ensemble will perform a concert presenting several exciting new compositions. The concert will feature the west coast premiere of USC visiting composer Michael Colgrass’ Te Tuma Te Papa. Written for solo percussionist, Te Tuma Te Papa is a sensational showpiece that uses a wide variety of instruments including marimba, vibraphone, prepared piano and various household items. Also presented on the program will be the west coast premiere of Eugene O’Brien’s In the Country of Last Things, works by Kenneth Eberhard, Steven Mackey and Director Donald Crockett’s own Celestial Mechanics, a work commissioned by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
Since 1984, Donald Crockett has directed the USC Thornton Contemporary Music Ensemble through an annual series of concerts that feature works by 20th century and living composers. The ensemble also has appeared on the Monday Evening Concerts and Green Umbrella series, with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and on tour in Berlin, Paris and Lyon. Under the direction of Crockett, the CME has presented numerous premieres and has been coached and/or conducted by such renowned composers as Witold Lutoslawski, John Harbison, Henryk Górecki and Joan Tower.
