The politics of Gujrat pogrom

Sponsored by South Asia Forum

Thu, October 31, 2002 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm

Admission: Free

von KleinSmid Center (VKC)
University Park Campus

Should the Gujarat killings of 2002 be assimilated effortlessly into a history of communal violence in India, or is there something distinct about them?

How can one explain, if at all, the ferocity of the killings and the peculiarly sadistic aspects of the pogrom? The talk will also consider such questions as the relationship of Hindu militancy in Gujarat to the Gujarati diaspora, the geopolitics of violence at
this juncture, and the nature of ethical responsibility and witnessing.
