This performance features the music of composer-in-residence Michael Daugherty. A pre-concert lecture begins at 7 p.m. with Michael Daugherty and Frank Ticheli.

The music of composer-in-residence Michael Daugherty, known for its unique blend of innovation and American pop culture, will be featured in a performance by the USC Thornton Contemporary Music Ensemble.

Under the direction of Donald Crockett, the group will perform Sinatra Shag, Jackie’s Song and Firecracker.


One of the most performed and commissioned American composers of his generation, Michael Daugherty came to international attention when his Metropolis Symphony, a tribute to Superman comics, was performed by conductor David Zinman and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Other popular works of his include a percussion concerto commissioned and premiered by Evelyn Glennie and the National Symphony Orchestra and Philadelphia Stories, a work commissioned and premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by David Zinman.

Since 1984, Donald Crockett has directed the Thornton Contemporary Music Ensemble through an annual series of concerts that feature works by 20th century and living composers. The ensemble also has appeared on the Monday Evening Concerts and Green Umbrella series, with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and on tour in Berlin, Paris and Lyon. Under the direction of Crockett, the CME has presented numerous premieres and has been coached and/or conducted by such renowned composers as Witold Lutoslawski, John Harbison, Henryk Górecki, Joan Tower and Bernard Rands.
