Faculty drummers Peter Erskine, Gregg Field and Ndugu Chancler join Shelton Berg and the Thornton Jazz Orchestra in a concert featuring student compositions in a variety of styles.
Director Shelton Berg leads the USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra in a concert featuring legendary drummers and percussionists from the faculty of the USC Thornton School of Music. Ndugu Chancler, Gregg Field and Peter Erskine join the ensemble for a performance of music composed or arranged by students of the Jazz Studies Department.
The jazz percussion faculty of the USC Thornton School of Music comprises some of the most versatile and sought after drummers in the music scene. Ndugu Chancler, a three-time Grammy nominee, has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Lionel Ritchie, Thelonius Monk and John Lee Hooker. He was the drummer on the biggest selling pop album by Michael Jackson, Thriller, providing the beat on "Billie Jean." Gregg Field, voted one of the "world's greatest drummers" by the readers of Modern Drummer magazine, has collaborated with Quincy Jones, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Gloria Estefan, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole and Stevie Wonder. Peter Erskine has been at the forefront of world-class jazz ensembles for twenty-five years, including the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Weather Report. All of the featured faculty drummers are Yamaha performing artists.
The USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra is an 18-piece ensemble featuring the most talented students from the Thornton School. Through innovative concerts and collaborations with major jazz musicians, the group explores the textual and stylistic possibilities of the jazz orchestra. Shelton Berg, the dynamic director of the Thornton Jazz Orchestra and chair of the USC Thornton Jazz Studies Department, is an accomplished jazz pianist, composer, arranger and educator.
