Hailed for his originality since his 1995 debut album, ‘Introducing Brad Mehldau,’ this classically-trained jazz pianist brings his trio for an evening of jazz standards, new compositions and even the songs of Radiohead.
In their polyphonic jazz, Mehldau's trio often puts several meters one above the other. And though Larry Grenadier and Jorge Rossy create the fundament of their trio, giving Mehldau the space to concentrate on his virtuosity, their efforts are always geared towards innovations with the "trio," rather than the art of jazz piano with accompaniment.
Mehldau combines elements of both jazz and classical music in his distinctive style. He has worked with many well-known jazz musicians, including Charlie Haden, Joshua Redman, Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade, and has recorded with Willie Nelson. His playing was also featured in Stanley Kubrick's 1999 film "Eyes Wide Shut."
Mehldau's most recent album is 2002's Largo, produced by Jon Brion and born out of their collaborations at the local L.A. music club Largo.
Stereophile says that "when he plays, embers glow, then burst into flames."
