Auto parts and steel pipes take center stage with centuries-old instruments in a concert by one of USC's most intriguing performance groups.
Directed by Erik Forrester, the ensemble showcases pieces written for traditional Chinese percussion. Typically learned by rote and passed down by elders, this music - celebrating animals and evocative of their sounds - was suppressed in China during the Cultural Revolution. It has made a comeback in its homeland but is still only rarely heard in the West.
Also on the program: contemporary compositions by Gavin Bryars and Tan Dun, as well as premieres of works written for the ensemble by USC Thornton graduate students Matthew Brown and Jeffrey Holmes.
