African-American science fiction writer and two-time Hugo award-winner Octavia Butler presents her classic book, “Kindred.”

The book is the ground-breaking science fiction novel about slavery and time travel. The Los Angeles Herald Examiner described "Kindred" - originally published in 1979 - as "a shattering work of art with much to say about love, hate, slavery and racial dilemmas, then and now."

The book's heroine, Dana, is a contemporary black woman celebrating her 26th birthday when she is snatched abruptly from her California home and transported to the antebellum South. The actions that Dana takes there dictate her family’s future and her very existence.

Butler is author of many novels, including "Adulthood Rites," "Lilith's Blood" and "The Parable of the Sower." She is the winner of a Nebula Award and a MacArthur genius award recipient.
