Sally Promey, professor of art history at the University of Maryland and Ailsa Mellon Bruce senior fellow at the National Gallery of Art, discusses the relationship between religion and culture in America.
Promey is the author of the 1999 book on John Singer Sargent, “Painting Religion in Public” (pictured). It is considered the definitive work on the artist.
She also wrote “Spiritual Spectacles: Vision and Image in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Shakerism” and edited David Morgan’s book “The Visual Culture of American Religions.” All of these books are available through the USC Pertusati Bookstore.
