'Tapestry of Life' represents 10 years of photography from more than 40 international excursions by Illinois agri-businessman and photographer Howard Buffett and communicates the struggles and needs of individuals in the Third World.

If you were the offspring of a billionaire, it might be easy to ignore the troubles of the world.

Unless you’re Howard Buffett, who not only sees a myriad of problems facing humanity, he photographs them.

Buffett has assembled his images for a book and exhibition that draws attention to the world’s woes. The pictures speak volumes about the plight faced by people on various continents.

“A well-presented image needs no explanation,” he said.

Unlike his previous collections of photographs, the images presented in this exhibition include wildlife and agricultural subjects, as well as a portfolio featuring people from around the world.

The photographs chronicle the vast differences in countries and cultures – from poverty in the U.S. to modern-day slavery in Senegal (represented above in the image titled “Promising Eyes”). Other images were shot in exotic locales such as Bangladesh, India, Mali and Rwanda, as well as other regions.

Along with “Tapestry of Life,” Buffett has completed books such as “On the Edge: Balancing Life’s Resources,” which focuses on global population and food consumption.

Buffett, the son of industrialist Warren Buffett, is currently the chairman of Lindsay Manufacturing, a worldwide leader in the manufacturing of agricultural irrigation products. He also serves as president of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and operates BioImages, a photography and publishing company. He is president of Buffett Farms, an 840-acre family farm in central Illinois and a 400-acre farm in Eastern Nebraska.

As an agriculturalist, Buffett has serious concerns about the way agriculture impacts wildlife habitat and ecosystems.

“Traveling to India to photograph tigers or to Tanzania for the wildlife migration puts a photographer in the heart of problems that impact both animals and humans,” Buffett said. “The challenge of preserving wildlife while providing resources for people became more evident to me. It wasn’t a problem limited to one country, or a few countries. It was a problem for the world.”
