Mandy Aftel, founder of Aftelier Perfumes and curator of “The Foul and the Fragrant” exhibition, leads a demonstration on the process of creating perfume out of natural ingredients.
Aftel has participated in panels for the perfume industry under the auspices of the Fragrance Foundation and has demonstrated the creation of natural perfume for the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. She has taught the art of natural perfumery to the public at San Francisco’s Exploratorium, the Learning Annex, COPIA (The American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts) and Esalen Institute.
Aftel’s client list includes Madonna, Kate Hudson, Amber Valletta, Janet Fitch and Donovan Leitch. Her work has been featured in such publication as Vogue, Vanity Fair and InStyle.
A therapist for artists and writers for 25 years, the Berkeley-based Aftel also is the author of numerous books, including “Essence and Alchemy: A Natural History of Perfume” (which won the Sense of Smell Institute's 2001 Richard B. Solomon Award) and “The Story of Your Life: Becoming the Author of Your Experience.” Aftel currently is on tour in support of her latest book, “Aroma: The Magic of Essential Oils in Food & Fragrance,” which she co-authored with chef Daniel Patterson.
