"Mapmaking in the Choson Dynasty"
Prof. Ledyard this year marks his 52nd anniversary in Korean Studies. While in military service (1953-56) he was trained in Korean and served in Korea and Japan. He then enrolled in the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his B.A. (1958), M.A. (1963), and Ph.D. (1966) degrees, all in classical Chinese language and literature, with the thesis for each degree on a Korean subject. He joined the faculty of Columbia University in 1964, where he served several terms as Chairman of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. He was the founding director of the East Asian Institute's Center for Korean Research. He is author of The Korean Language Reform of 1446, The Dutch Come to Korea, and of a work currently in the final stages of preparation, Tamhon's Peking Memoir, and of many articles on Korean history, culture, and politics in professional journals and conference volumes, and of the book-length monograph, Cartography in Korea, which is included in the East Asian volume of History of Cartography edited by David Woodward. He has also published work in the fields of Chinese, Japanese, and Mongolian history.
