The IGM Art Gallery is proud to present the Broken Eggs exhibition and the curatorial philosophy and selections of Larisa Pilinsky and The Bunker Group as they are exemplary of the gallery’s mission to explore open-minded creative process.
The former Soviet Union's rulers categorized as "broken eggs" those who had the courage to think and act for themselves. The Soviet government attacked as degenerate artistic behavior any artistic expression outside social realism. It bulldozed unlicensed exhibitions, burned art, and occasionally put dissenting artists in asylums or jail.
A group of experimental Armenian painters in Armenia risked expressing their emotions through abstract art. When Soviet repression gave way to perestroika, the group emerged from the basement, taking the name "The Bunker Group." Grown to include many nationalities, the group is international in scope, and recognized by major art critics. These artists are rebuilding their lives in Bunker (non material) space, far from the countries of their origins and exploring freedom of expression in the context of American democracy.
Opening reception July 14th, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
