Coinciding with Parents Weekend and Half-Century Trojans Weekend, Festival 125 features a festive blend of performances, panels, tours, exhibits, lectures and presentations over a four-day period, Oct. 6-9.
Exactly one hundred and twenty-five years after its founding, USC presents Festival 125, a four-day birthday bash with the theme “Inventing the Future, Honoring the Past,” which celebrates the university’s unparalleled academic, cultural and athletic accomplishments.
Coinciding with Parents Weekend and Half-Century Trojans Weekend, Festival 125 features a combination of 345 lectures, panels, tours, exhibits, presentations and more over a four-day period, Oct. 6-9.
More than 350,000 alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and community representatives have been invited to the event, with more than 100,000 expected to attend.
Highlights of the festival include:
• The Academic Celebration (Oct. 6, 10:30 a.m., Bovard Auditorium): Open to all attendees, with a simulcast at the Center Stage in Hahn Plaza, this multimedia exploration of USC’s past and future includes performances by the USC School of Theatre, the USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra and the Fresh Start Community Choir and presentations from Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, USC President Steven B. Sample and USC Provost C. L. Max Nikias.
• 125th Anniversary Birthday Celebration and Picnic Lunch: (Oct. 6, noon, Tommy Trojan): All attendees are invited for lunch and cupcakes and to watch the cutting of a 6-foot-tall ceremonial birthday cake designed by the USC School of Theatre.
• The Gala Concert (Oct. 6, 7 p.m., Bovard Auditorium): Featuring performances by the USC Thornton Symphony and Itzhak Perlman, the concert will be simulcast on video screen at the Center Stage and on KUSC radio.
• The Academic Showcase (Oct. 6-9, all day): Designed to highlight the anniversary’s theme, the showcase includes 125 lectures and panel sessions, 18 guided tours, 30 receptions, more than 20 musical and theatrical performances, 18 exhibits and 17 demonstrations.
• The Festival 125 Pavilion and Center (Oct. 6-8, Hahn Plaza): Serving as the central source of information for the festival, the pavilion also features history artifacts and hands-on “Inventing the Future” exhibits.
Michael Kloss, director of university events, hopes visitors will come away with a strong sense of USC’s accomplishments and aspirations.
“It is a wonderful time for the Trojan Family to honor our common past while looking forward to the future of the university,” Kloss said.
