Anticipated Drivers for Campus Development and Growth

The following “drivers” will influence USC’s need for facilities and space on the Health Sciences campus through 2035. Overall, modest growth in educational programs is projected during this time, whereas more substantial growth in research and clinical programs will need to be accommodated in anticipation of expanded private health insurance under universal health-care reform.
Academics: Teaching and Research
- Potential twofold increase (possibly even greater) in the number of principal investigators
- Moderate growth in student enrollment at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, USC School of Pharmacy, and divisions of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy and of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy
- Relocation of academic programs currently operating in leased space at the Alhambra campus to the Health Sciences campus to promote efficiency and facilitate interdisciplinary and inter-professional learning
Clinical Services: In- and Outpatient Care
- Substantial growth in outpatient population
- Potential growth in inpatient population
- Long-term expansion and potential consolidation of USC Norris Cancer Center programs, including ambulatory care and inpatient beds
- Further integration of basic and applied research to channel new knowledge toward meeting societal needs (in fulfillment of USC’s 2004 Strategic Plan)
In concert with these primary drivers, corresponding secondary drivers – the need for campus-life uses and amenities, open spaces, and improved access, circulation and parking to accommodate development and growth – also will come into play.
