Professional Development

USC Professional Development offers a variety of ways to improve your own professional skills and the productivity of your work team. Each spring, summer and fall, they offer dozens of workshops and course work for seven certificate programs. The office will customize programs and workshops to specifically meet the needs of your department or academic unit. Professional Development also offers internal consulting services for departments and academic units to improve individual and departmental effectiveness.
Registering for Workshops
The fall, spring and summer workshop schedules are posted online as well as complete registration instructions. Your supervisor's approval is required to register. There is no charge for the workshops unless you sign up and do not attend. A $100 cancellation fee will be charged to your department if you cancel less than three business days prior to the start of the class, or if you do not cancel and do not attend the class.
Certificate Programs
Since the fall of 2001, over two thousand employees have enrolled in one or more of Professional Development's seven certificate programs. Current certificate programs are interpersonal effectiveness, professional business writing, supervision, human resource management, professional office administration, project management, and management. These programs allow participants to pursue timely completion of a set of related interpersonal, leadership, business writing, computer and/or managerial skills workshops. Once completed, participants receive formal recognition through a certificate from Professional Development.
Executive Development
These programs are designed especially for USC senior leadership.
Faculty Programs
Professional Development partners with various academic groups on campus to provide faculty with developmental opportunities. The Academic Leadership and Development Committee (sponsored by the Provost and the Academic Senate) offers programs designed especially for faculty regarding their particular needs and concerns. Previous workshops have included: Strategies for Success in the USC Environment; Career Success for Non-Tenure-Track Faculty; Navigating Tenure Review (for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year Tenure-Track Assistant Professors); Dossier Preparation (for 4th and 5th Year Tenure-Track Assistant Professors); and a series of sessions for department chairs.
The Office for Research Advancement also offers workshops for faculty and researchers, including: Developing a Research Funded Program; Preparing a Large Inter-Disciplinary Center Proposal; Writing Persuasive Proposals; and Developing and Submitting NIH Grant Application.
