How do I pay my share of benefits?

The cost to the employee for coverage of particular benefits is paid through payroll deduction or reduction. Benefit contributions that are eligible for a salary reduction (pretax payments) reduce your tax liability by reducing your taxable income. The salary reduction is made before taxes are calculated. Some employee benefit contributions reduce employment tax income (for example, FICA-OASDI and FICA-Medicare and Disability), and others reduce federal and state income (federal and state withholding), and some reduce both. Employee benefit contributions eligible for this treatment may include health and dental insurance, USC basic and supplemental disability plans, retirement plans, and flexible spending accounts. Parking also may be paid by salary reduction.
Other employee benefit contributions, such as life insurance premiums, which are paid through payroll deduction, are taken after taxes are calculated.
Your check stub or payroll advice slip itemizes earnings, taxes, deductions and reductions, including both the employee and employer contributions for any university benefit or service. This information is also available online via eTrac (http://www.usc.edu/etrac). Information is provided for the current pay period as well as calendar year-to-date totals. Contact your home department coordinator if you have questions regarding salary deductions or reductions.
