Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance pays a pre-determined amount to your beneficiaries in the event of your death in an accident, for example, in an automobile accident. The insurance pays lesser amounts to you or your beneficiaries for various types of accidental injuries that result in the loss of limbs, speech or hearing. USC pays for $10,000 in basic accident coverage for benefits-eligible employees and $100,000 of basic coverage for benefits-eligible employees traveling on an authorized university business trip, commuting to or from their university job, or while working at a USC facility. Included with this USC-provided basic coverage is the AXA emergency travel assistance program which provides the employee with worldwide medical emergency assistance and other benefits. The travel assistance program covers both business and personal travel.

You may purchase additional coverage for yourself and your eligible dependents. A person insured as an employee may not also be covered as a dependent of another employee. Benefit amounts paid for accidental death or injury to covered dependents are a percentage of the insured employee's coverage. Benefit payments progressively decline for employees over age 70 and their covered dependents.

What do I need to do?

The USC-paid accident insurance for eligible employees is automatic. However, you do need to designate a beneficiary and periodically review that designation. Forms to enroll in supplemental accidental death and dismemberment insurance are available online or through your benefits office. If you're eligible for Plan C, you must enroll in Plan C within 60 days of hire or during open enrollment.

Enroll Coverage starts Change or cancel
Within 60 days of hire USC-paid coverage begins on first day of employment; employee-purchased coverage begins the first of the month after enrollment During open enrollment or within 30 days of status changes

When can I make changes?

You can add or delete dependents or increase or decrease the amount of insurance during open enrollment or within 30 days of a status change. You can change your beneficiary at anytime. In California (or other community property states), designating a beneficiary other than your spouse or registered domestic partner requires his or her consent.
