---------------------------------------------------------- /dev/joe's list of Magic:the Gathering errors, version 1.1 ---------------------------------------------------------- This list may be distributed freely; please do so! =====> This list is for educational use only and may NOT be sold or used in any product or program sold for profit. <===== I generally omit from this list changes or errors in wording in the text box, unless there are actually misspelled words, and only the most famous of the "printing spot" type of problems are listed. All misspelled words, wrong or missing symbols, etc. should be listed. If you find anything not listed, email me at devjoe@wilma.che.utexas.edu. By the way, I *do* want to hear about errors in the non-english editions. There are reportedly hundreds of translation errors in the various language editions; I don't want to hear about those, but if a card has the wrong art, casting cost, color, artist name, power & toughness, etc., it goes on the list. This is more or less in chronological order by the first appearance of each error: Alpha(A), Beta(B), Arabian Nights(AN), Unlimited(UL), Antiquities(AQ), Revised(RV), Legends(LG), The Dark(DK), Fallen Empires (FE), 4th Edition(4E), Ice Age(IA), Chronicles(CH), and Homelands(HL), alphabetically within each set, with errors that affect multiple cards listed at the end of that set's listing. Foreign language editions are listed after their english-language counterparts, regardless of the time they came out, and some may be bunched together when I have no errors known in several languages. Sources of this information include the Pocket Players' Guide (1st edition), various issues of _Duelist_ magazine, Mike Stenger, Paul Waterman, Rob Irrgang, and many people on MTG-L. Changes since 1.0: Added missing listing for CoP:Red. Added listing for 4E/german forest w/ plains art. There are listings for 2 german and 2 spanish 4th edition wrong picture errors, one (possibly two) similar error(s) in german revised, and an as-yet-unplaced french error. Added listing for revised missing bevels. Added headers for all foreign sets, even if I have no errors for them. === Alpha === Basalt Monolith (A): Untap cost uses a plain 3; should be a mana symbol 3. Birds of Paradise (A): "//" appears in text after "Flying". CoP: Red (A): Wrong art credit (Anson Maddocks); should be Mark Tedin. Cyclopean Tomb (A): Missing casting cost. Death Ward (A): Wrong art credit (Dan Frazier); should be Mark Poole. Elvish Archers (A): Power/Toughness was 1/2 instead of 2/1. Red Elemental Blast (A): Card type was "Instant"; should be "Interrupt". Sedge Troll (A): Wrong art credit (Jeff A. Menges); should be Dan Frazier. Tropical Island (A): Wrong art credit (Mark Poole); should be Jesper Myrfors. Unsummon (A): Has "CARD ed" in text in place of "discarded". CoP: Black, Volcanic Island (A): These cards were unintentionally omitted from the alpha printing. Also, only two of the three artworks for each basic land appear in Alpha, but the addition was made later, to make the set total the 300 cards advertised on the boxes. Demonic Hordes, Drain Life, Force of Nature, Phantasmal Forces, Rock Hydra (A): Letters B,U,G,R used instead of black, blue, green, red mana symbols in text. Orcish Artillery, Orcish Oriflamme (A): Wrong casting cost of <1R> instead of <1RR> for Artillery and <3R> for Oriflamme. Black Vise (A/B/UL): "Black Vise" is not capitalized in text. Jade Statue (A/B/UL): Card type is just "Artifact"; this is the only artifact before RV not labeled as Continuous, Mono, Poly, or Artifact Creature. Douglas Shuler cards in A/B/UL [Animate Artifact, Benalish Hero, CoP: White, Contract From Below, Demonic Tutor, Drain Life, Drain Power, Dwarven Warriors, Force of Nature, Frozen Shade, Glasses of Urza, Hypnotic Specter, Icy Manipulator, Northern Paladin, all 3 Mountains, Power Surge, Prodigal Sorceror, Psionic Blast, Righteousness, Serra Angel, Tranquility, Unholy Strength, Unsummon, Uthden Troll, Veteran Bodyguard, Volcanic Eruption, Weakness]: All misspell his name as "Schuler" except the B/UL Icy Manipulator which has it correct. All cards which should have apostrophes in their names in A/B/UL/RV/AN/AQ [Abu Ja'far(AN), Aladdin's Lamp(AN/RV), Aladdin's Ring(AN/RV), Ashnod's Altar(AQ), Ashnod's Battle Gear(AQ), Ashnod's Transmogrant(AQ), Drafna's Restoration(AQ), Feldon's Cane(AQ), Gaea's Avenger(AQ), Gaea's Liege (A/B/UL/RV), Hurkyl's Recall(AQ/RV), Jandor's Ring(AN/RV), Jandor's Saddlebags(AN/RV), Mishra's Factory(AQ), Mishra's War Machine(AQ/RV), Mishra's Workshop(AQ), Mons's Goblin Raiders(A/B/UL/RV), Nevinyrral's Disk(A/B/UL/RV), Ring of Ma'ruf(AN), Siren's Call(A/B/UL/RV), Tawnos's Coffin(AQ), Tawnos's Wand(AQ), Tawnos's Weaponry(AQ), Titania's Song (AQ/RV), Urza's Avenger(AQ), Urza's Chalice(AQ), Urza's Mine(AQ), Urza's Miter(AQ), Urza's Power Plant(AQ), Urza's Tower(AQ), Will-O'-The-Wisp (A/B/UL/RV)]: The font used for the card titles had no apostrophe character, so there are spaces where the apostrophes should be. === Beta === Nightmare (B): In the beta printing, most Nightmares have a printing spot over part of the word "swamp"; there was some collector interest in this. === Arabian Nights === Many commons in AN [Army of Allah, Bird Maiden, Erg Raiders, Giant Tortoise, Hasran Ogress, Moorish Cavalry, Nafs Asp, Oubliette, Piety, Rukh Egg, Stone-Throwing Devils, War Elephant, Wyluli Wolf]: Two different versions of each of these cards exist -- one using the smaller, darker mana symbols used on other Arabian Nights cards, and one using the larger, lighter mana symbols used in other sets. === Antiquities === Reconstruction (AQ): Missing the AQ expansion icon. === Revised === Nevinyrral's Disk (RV): Missing tap symbol in activation cost. Bottle of Suleiman is the only other "Mono Artifact" which didn't get a tap symbol in RV, and it still doesn't have one in 4E. Onulet (RV): Wrong art credit (Kerstin Kaman); should be Anson Maddocks. Plateau (RV): Wrong art credit (Drew Tucker); should be Cornelius Brudi. Serendib Efreet (RV): The artwork, artist name, and border color are taken from the Ifh-Biff Efreet; the name, text, and casting cost are from the Serendib Efreet. Many of the foreign editions have errors like this on other cards. All cards (RV): The entire revised printing was missing the outer "beveled" edge that normally lies between the colored border and the outer white (or black) border. === Revised, French (limited, unlimited?) === === Revised, German (limited, unlimited?) === Drudge Skeleton: see German 4th edition. Manabarbs: In German unlimited only, has the picture for a Sedge Troll. === Revised, Italian (limited, unlimited) === === Legends === Active Volcano (LG): Wrong art credit (Brian Snoddy); should be Justin Hampton. AErathi Berserker (LG): The font used for the card titles was missing the AE character, so the title is printed as "rathi Berserker". All Hallow's Eve (LG): Card type is "Sorcery", should be "Enchantment" Blood Lust (LG): Should begin "Target creature gains" instead of "Target creatures gain" Chromium (LG): The 2 in the rampage ability is in a mana circle, but shouldn't be. Disharmony (LG): Wrong art credit; should be Bryon Wackwitz. Equinox (LG): All text, casting cost, and expansion icon are shifted to the right from where they should be. Imprison (LG): Gray circle for mana symbol in activation cost is one line too high. Infinite Authority (LG): The word "creature" is misspelled "creaeture" once. Mountain Stronghold (LG): This card (one of the "bands with other" lands) is worded differently from the other four cards like it. Psionic Entity (LG): Wrong art credit; should be Justin Hampton. Sentinel (LG): One place in the text, "sentinel" is not capitalized. === Legends, Italian === === The Dark === Gaea's Touch (DK): 1 out of 3 Gaea's Touches on the common sheet has all the text, casting cost, and expansion icon shifted to the left. Fountain of Youth, Runesword (DK): The "hairy" versions of these cards were popular briefly while the set was in print. These have unusual printing spots in the text box which look like pieces of hair. Many other cards in DK are known to have printing spots in various places. All Dennis Detwiller cards in DK [Flood, Merfolk Assassin, Goblin Rock Sled, Pikemen, Scavenger Folk, Squire, Tivadar's Crusade]: All misspell his name as "Denise Detwiler". Most U2 uncommons in DK: there are two versions of colorless mana symbols, one lighter than the other. The difference is very slight, but distinct -- you won't see the same type of variation on cards other than the U2's. === Dark, Italian === === 4th edition test print === "4th edition test print": There was an entire printing of Magic destroyed because Richard Garfield was upset with mistakes in the cards as sent to the printers. This printing occurred in late summer 1994, roughly 120 million cards were printed before the cards were destroyed, and this delay caused the second shipment of Dark to be delayed, and combined with the excessive printing of Fallen Empires cards, eventually resulted in a shortage of RV cards at the end of 1994. A few of the cards from the "test print" made their way into some of the RV packs produced just after Carta Mundi switched back to RV, and among other things, a corrected Serendib Efreet and a blue-bordered Hurricane were seen. The style of card borders, etc. was most like Legends and Dark (except white bordered, of course). This has also been called the "summer edition". === 4th edition === Blue Elemental Blast, Fireball (4E): There are promos of these two cards which are identical to the 4th edition cards, except the copyright date is 1994 instead of 1995. === Renaissance: French, German, Italian === === 4th edition: French === === 4th edition: German === Forest (4E-german): One Forest card has the picture for a Plains. Drudge Skeletons: The early printings of German 4E Drudge Skeletons have the borders and art for a swamp. See http://204.245.28.105/users/matt/ for a picture of this card, or http://204.245.28.105/users/matt/error-s.jpg for just the picture. This error may also exist in the German Revised, perhaps unlimited german revised only? === 4th edition: Italian === === 4th edition: Portuguese (limited, unlimited) === === 4th edition: Spanish (limited, unlimited) === Serra Angel (4E-spanish): I have a report of a Spanish Serra Angel with blue borders and the Time Elemental's picture. Not sure if the error is on the limited or unlimited card, or both. Burrowing (4E-spanish): Early versions of this card (in the unlimited edition only?) had the Strip Mine picture by mistake, but the currently produced cards are correct. === 4th edition: Japanese (limited, unlimited) === Not out yet, but it is announced officially in Duelist #9. === Ice Age === Arcum's Whistle (IA): The first X in the text should be in a colorless mana circle, but isn't. Johtull Wurm (IA): Name misspelled "Johtull Worm" twice in text. Fylgja, Prismatic Ward (IA): These two cards are the only ones in Ice Age to use the old white mana symbol. There were promos of these cards which used the old mana symbol and apparently WotC did not want them to be different from the regular cards. Starting with 4th edition, WotC used a jagged, even, 8-pointed sun instead of the scribble-looking, irregular 12-pointed sun from earlier sets, with the exception of these two cards. === Ice Age (are there foreign editions of this?) === === Chronicles === Wall of Shadows (CH): Has AQ expansion icon instead of LG icon. === Chronicles, Fre/Ger/Ita/Spa/Por === === Homelands === === Homelands, Fre/Ger/Ita/Spa/Por === === Miscellaneous/Uncategorized === This is usually the section where I have heard of an error, but I don't know the specifics to list it above yet. Aladdin's Ring: One of the French Aladdin's Rings had the Jandor's Ring artwork. I have a report this is in Renaissance but it doesn't make sense for it to be there, since neither Aladdin's Ring or Jandor's Ring was a new addition to 4E. Most likely it is in the original "revised" limited edition set. Disharmony and Psionic Entity: I have the error report from _Duelist_ but I don't have the card. Somebody tell me what artists' names are listed on these two cards.
