September 1-4, 1995- Gateway 15: This big event occurred during Labor Day weekend. Michael Nickoloff attended. He took 3rd place in the Type II tournament. Most other events were smaller than usual, showing that Magic may be loosing its popularity in Southern California. Shadowfist was no-where to be found, and everyone was playing it. Could it be the next magic?
September 30-October 1, 1995- Cardcon VII: Jason Jung and Michael Nickoloff attended this event on Saturday only. Jason fared O.K. in Type I and Type II by winning a total of 2 matches. Michael was dissapointed as he lost against a discard deck in the first Type II tournament and a white weenie (which won the second Type II tournament). However, Jason commanded the Melee tournament taking most kills and being the last to die. Michael tried his luck in trivia, and came in a respectable third place (at least he got to play the game show part). The day was fun for both, but they wished that they got a little farther in the Type I and II tournaments.
October 21, 1995- Something Unusual III: This tournament was attended by Greg Freese, Scott Danby, Jason Jung, and Michael Nickoloff. Michael Nickoloff and Scott Danby judged. Greg trounced the other players and took first in the Type I tournament. Scott and Greg cleaned up in the Team tournament and took home first place.
November 17, 1995- USC Deckmaster's Magic: the Gathering Tournament: Fall '95: The tournament has been cancelled. Due to lack of funding by the Discrecionary Board, we were unable to fund prizes. The officers were willing to help the club and the members submit dues early to help fund the prizes, but there was a lack of interest in the tournament itself. It is a shame that so many people in the club were willing to be in a tournament last semester; now very few people have the interest left. We will try to renew the interest of the tournament for next semester.
December 8, 1995- I'm Comics' Black Lotus tournament:
Scott Danby, Jason Jung, Greg Freese, John Collin, and Michael Nickoloff attended. After paying the $4 to enter, and fighting through the mess of little kids and a crowded store, the group gathered to see what competition was there. It was Type I for sure. "Pretty jewelry and flowers" abound the store. After a short auction (where Michael came up with a Drop of Honey for $15, and an A. Archeologist for $20), the tournament started. Scott and Greg were plagued by crappy draws, and were defeated quite easily. Jason faced "Frenchie" and was defeated after a tough match. Michael fared a little better and beat a stormbind deck in the first round. With his "deck", Michael actually killed through damage in the last duel of the match. (I kill you with my Jester's Cap!) In the second round, Michael lost to a U/G djinn deck.
They all learned that speed does kill and "The Deck" is too slow for viable tournament play in Southern California.
December 23, 1995- The Saturday Gathering: Michael Nickoloff attended. Michael won third place in Type II with a black/red discard deck. He also won first place in teams with a The Abyss/Jade Statue deck.
