Reference Books

Since standard reference tools such as the Greater Soviet Encyclopedia are readily available in other depositories, the IMRC avoids duplication by emphasizing unusual or "peripheral" materials such as telephone directories for Moscow and St. Petersburg-Leningrad of the pre- and post-Revolutionary periods, information sources such as the Detskaia entsiklopedia and Tekhnicheskaia entsiklopedia and early compendia of émigré activities such as Nicholas Martianoff's Russian Artists in America. Related to Reference is the subsection devoted to the history of Russian art which now includes practically all the chronological accounts of Russian art in all languages published before 1953. Another subsection of catalogs of private and public art collections in Russia, including the Hermitage, the Alexander III Museum, and the Rumiantsev Museum as well as an extensive series of exhibition catalogs also contributes to the Reference section.
