General Avant-Garde Sites

A brief but informative introduction to Russian avant-garde painting.  Examples of Neo-primitivism, Futurism, Rayonism and Suprematism are illustrated using images of the work of Larionov, Malevich, Goncharova and Tatlin.  Images enlarge, and are of good quality.

A creative site filled with interesting links on Russian avant-garde artists.  This includes an index of autobiographical links for each artist, as well as a good selection of images.  There are also links to other Russian art resources on the web, as well as a book list.

A site with great potential once it is finished.  The guided tour doesn't seem to work, and many links to individual artists are still missing.  Nonetheless, this gallery contains works by many avant-garde artists, including Kliun, Bobrov and Burliuk.  A brief history of Constructivism is included, as well as links to artists and images of their works.  They do enlarge, and the quality is not bad.

An excellent site of the Russian avant-garde, with links to individual artists from Bakst to Rozanova, and information on many stylistic aspects of the avant-garde: Rayonism, Suprematism, Futurism, etc.  Images are all of very high quality, and enlarge.

Contains more textual information than other sites, with many interesting developments of Russian avant-garde discussed (despite the awkward language at times!)  Click ahead to enter the site, and you will arrive at links to categories of artists in 1900, 1910, and 1920--with a large selection of images.  Also, when the homepage is loading just click "cancel" for Japanese fonts.

Book Designs

A fascinating collection of Futurist book covers, with interesting textual information on the history of the Italian Futurist Book.  While most attention is given to Marinetti, their is an interesting paragraph on the Russian Futurists in the context of Italian Futurism and the Russian lubok.  Images enlarge.

Examples of futurist books is illustrated here using Mayakovsky/Rodchenko's "Pro eto.  Ei i mnye," and Mayokovsky/Lissitsky's "Dlya golosa."  The textual information is quite interesting, but the images are small and do not enlarge.

Constructivism

A fascinating account of Constructivism from the Department of Architecture at the University of Melbourne.  Historical information from an architect's point of view, with interesting images.

A fantastic idea, though I can't seem to open these images in 3-D with Photoshop.  Using images of Construcivist architecture like Tatlin's "Monument to the Third International," this site has constructed 3-D images.  Very cool--I hope you can open them!

A nicely designed site, but without much content.  Click on the colored boxes for links to Malevich, Tatlin, Lissitsky, Rodchenko, or Moholy-Nagy.  Only one images is shown, however, which cannot be enlarged.  Textual information on Constructivism is also quite limited.

A good overview of Constructivism and Suprematism in terms of their place in 20th century art.  Also, an interesting paragraph on women Constructivists, including Popova, Exeter and Udaltsova.  No images here, but there are links to some within the text.

Futurism

If you are interested in "Victory Over the Sun," you must check this out!  Wonderful site with images of costume designs from the opera, as well as a movie clip from its reconstruction.  You will need Quick Time Player to view it, but can download it here as well.

Spend some time at this site!  Perhaps the most comprehensive Futurist site online, here you will find amazing links to everything from Marinetti speaking on sound files, to individual biographies on the Russian Futurists (go to "Other Futurists").  Each bio has corresponding images to the right, which enlarge.  Don't be alarmed by the full page appearance of this site--you can easily close the window in the top left of your screen.  Enjoy!
