18th-19th Century Russian Painting

18th Century

An extremely thorough and creative site, with links to individual artists and paintings.  Each painting is accompanied by a detailed description, and the textual information in general is quite good.  All images enlarge to full page size, and are of nice quality.

A very limited site with very few images displayed.  If you are interested in Nikitin or Antropov, check it out.  Images enlarge, but not very much.

19th Century

A nice overview of the Peredvizhniki, with images and descriptions of paintings by artists such as Repin, Perov and Kramskoi.  Images enlarge, and are of decent quality.

An excellent historical description of the Wanderers break from the Russian Academy of Arts and their subsequent formation of the Society of Traveling Exhibitions.  The text is illustrated with many images of 19th century painters, which enlarge to almost full page size and are of good quality.

A great resource, with good textual information, links to individual artists and high quality images.  Artists such as Repin, Levitan, Venetsianov, etc are given individual biographies with corresponding images that enlarge to nearly full page size.

Some interesting information on the 19th century in terms of painting, applied arts, and architecture.  Not extensive, but offers detailed information on certain art pieces in the museum collection, and is a good addition to sites only stressing 19th century painting.

While only covering the paintings of Repin, Surikov, Kramskoi and Perov, this site offers interesting though limited information on the 19th century painters in terms of the social era of Tolstoi and Chernyshevsky.  Images enlarge and are of good quality.
