Theory/Criticism

Theory and Criticism encompasses both theoretical tracts (from an early edition of Lev Tolstoi's What Is Art? to the transactions of the First Congress of Soviet Writers and criticial accounts of particular schools and groups. Authors here include Boris Arvatov, Alexandre Benois, Pavel Ettinger, Aleksei Gan, Sergei Makovsky, Ivan Matsa, Nikolai Punin, Vladimir Stasov, and Yakov Tugendkhold, while movements covered range from Realism through Cubo-Futurism to Socialist Realism. The Section also has a substantial number of pre-Revolutionary academic textbooks on technical subjects such as perspective and anatomy and a number of popular explanations of art, esthetics, style, etc.
