American Language Institute (ALI)
ALI was founded in 1959 as one of the first programs in the nation to instruct international students in English as a second language.
Department of Classics
Classics at USC offers language and literature courses in classical Greek and Latin as well studies of the myths, philosophies and political thought of Greek and Roman civilizations. Both undergraduate and graduate programs in Classics are offered.
Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures
East Asian Languages and Cultures at USC provides students with a well-rounded education on East Asia by focusing on the study of the languages, linguistics, literature, thought and civilizations of China, Japan and Korea.
Department of French and Italian
The French & Italian Department offers study in French and Italian languages, culture and literature, which consist of the French major, the French minor, the Italian major, the Italian minor, the French Honors Program as well as a Ph.D. program in French.
Department of Linguistics
The Linguistics department is home to the instruction of Hindi and Arabic languages as well as the study of linguistics, which focuses on the different aspects of language: how it is structured, how its sounds are organized, how it is used in society, and how it is related other cognitive capacities. Linguistics at USC includes a graduate program and an undergraduate major in several of these areas.
Department of Slavic Languages and Literature
The Slavic department at USC is devoted to the study of the language and culture of modern Russia--a country with untold potential for the future. The department offers undergraduate studies in Russian and graduate studiy in Russian Language and Literature with a Certificate in Teaching offered as well. Polish and German instruction is also available through the Slavic language department.
