Portuguese
Portuguese is a language with roots in Spanish, French, and Italian. This language is a door to a variety of cultures that span the globe!
Many students choose to studyPortuguese because of the increasing international popularity of Brazilian culture; beautiful beaches, exotic food, and rhythmic music. Cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro - especially at Carnival - are two of South America's most vibrant and popular destinations.
Portuguese is not only spoken in Brazil and Portugal. Because of its geographic position in the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal was one of the first countries to lead explorations into the New World - spreading the Portuguese language throughout these lands such as in the islands of Cape Verde, Azores, Guiné-Bissau, São Tomé and Principe.. In Africa, Portuguese is spoken in Mozambique, Angola, Macau, Timor and Galiza. And Portuguese is also spoken in Indian cities such as Málaca and Casamansa.
Portuguese is offered at USC in two intensive courses starting with Portuguese I in the Fall semester and continuing with more advanced study in the Spring term. In addition, the classes are generally smaller than other language courses so you will receive more individual attention.
