The Great Palace

at Amarna

Amarna, the great city of Akhenaten the heretic king, is truly a site shrouded in mystery. Capitol only for 17 years, after Akhenaten's demise, it was razed and its monuments used as quarry. The only things left for the most part, were the very foundations. The ancient mystery surrounding Akhenaten and the events of his reign give way to a modern day mystery, which is the reconstruction of the city. Like a modern-day Roshomon, or a film-noir derived plot, the three principal expeditions to Amarna provide very different points of view, leaving what we consider to be facts to greatly be conjecture.. And quite possibly no site at Amarna is as rife with contradiction and conjecture as is the Great Palace.
