The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) offers both graduate (M.A. and Ph.D.) and undergraduate (B.A.) programs. The newly designed Ph.D. program began accepting applications in fall 2006.
Through our established B.A. programs, students acquire systematic training in linguistic and cultural competence for effective communication in China, Japan, and Korea and for better understanding of these East Asian countries. Students typically concentrate on one East Asian language and culture, while also taking broader survey courses on East Asia as a cultural unit. They may elect to complete up to one year of their course work in East Asia through various study-abroad programs.
The newly designed Ph.D. program in EALC fosters original approaches to East Asian studies. With an emphasis on interdisciplinary and innovative research, the program provides students with systematic training in East Asian languages, literatures, and cultures. Students entering the program will acquire expertise in one main national tradition and research field, and will be encouraged to take advantage of our unique programmatic strengths in such areas as visual culture and gender studies.
The growing faculty in EALC is committed to intra-regional and interdisciplinary studies of East Asia, which includes critical interaction among the cultures of China, Japan, and Korea, and integration of modern and pre-modern studies. We engage the arts, languages, literatures, histories, media, religions, and visual and material cultures of East Asia.
Located in Los Angeles, the University of Southern California offers unparalleled access to numerous institutional, cultural, and intellectual resources for the study of East Asia. Within the university, the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures enjoys support from programs and schools such as the East Asian Studies Center, the Korean Studies Institute, the USC School of Cinema Arts, the Center for Feminist Research, the Center for Law, History, and Culture, and the recently instituted Visual Studies Graduate Certificate Program. We also maintain close ties with other research universities in Southern California.
