We are a nation of noble ideals which demand liberty, equality, prosperity, and democracy for all Americans. I say, "Bravo!"

But I am also a Democratic Realist. I know how hard it is to develop and maintain unity among a people as diverse as our own. I also know that intense mass involvement in politics is dangerous to stability and order in our republic.

We must not stir up people's animosities. We must not urge them to get involved. Instead, we should rely on (1) individuals working productively to improve their lives and (2) sober leaders legislating step by step progress toward greater equality.

And that is why I recommend the Individual Approach.
