THESIS
IF
PROGRESS
INCLUDES
GREATER
INDIVIDUAL
HAPPINESS
AND
GREATER
SOCIAL
HARMONY,
WE
CANNOT
EXPECT
MUCH
OF IT.

1. Human nature is unchangeable.
2. Unchangeable human nature is driven by people's selfish,
impassioned search for pleasure.
3. People's search for pleasure generates internal tensions
and external conflicts.
4. Little can be done to reduce people's tensions and conflicts.
5. Accordingly, little can be done to make people happier
than early generations; little can be done to enable people to
live together more peacefully than prior generations.
