Center for Active Learning in International Studies

The Personal Worlds program begins with an ice breaker activity entitled Four-of-a-Kind where two high school students and two USC international students from the Langauge Academy explore things either they all had in common or that were unique to one of them.

... and some groups were Three-of-a-Kind.

Personal Worlds
Student-to-Student
Interview Program

Everybody agrees ~ the one-to-one interviews
need to be longer... There is not enough time
to discuss all that they want
to share with each other!

Personal Worlds
brings together local high school students and USC international students
enrolled in the Language Academy at the Rossier School of Education.

The goal is to share personal ideas and experiences that expand inter-cultural exchange. In addition to the important substance of interviews, high school students practice skills needed when meeting new people to discuss their personal backgrounds and opinions - skills of speaking comfortably and listening respectfully in order to reach beyond small talk toward effective communication about different cultural views of life and varying national perspectives on international issues.

Pictured on this page, 25 students from Bell High School helped us launch the program in Spring 2004 with 25 Language Academy students. They set a very high standard of success! and everybody had a great time!

The Personal Worlds interviews are part of VIP Day - a program of activities for a full day at USC centered around case teaching of international issues.

For the 2nd Personal Worlds program in Fall 2004, the Bell High School students were guests of the Language Academy's International Expo - a pot luck lunch and cultural fair.
